September is here, and with cooler temperatures coming we’ll soon have to start layering up on the roads and trails. Today 7mesh announces their new Airmap collection for Fall 2023, an innovative line of air-permeable riding gear that includes pieces for MTB, road, and gravel riders.

Last winter I checked out 7mesh’s headquarters and learned from their VP of product Ian Martin about why PFAS chemicals were being banned for use in water-resistant outdoor clothing.  At that time I got a sneak peek at the incoming Airmap clothing, which exemplifies 7mesh’s shift to making the best riding gear possible without PFAS chemicals.

I have an Airmap Cache Anorak for testing, but it’s been too warm to wear it before the product launch: Keep an eye on Bikerumor for an upcoming review of the Cache Anorak and 7mesh’s Flightpath pants.

7mesh Airmap Clothing – Technical Details:

7mesh Airmap clothing, MTB, river

The new Airmap clothing uses three different selectively placed permeable and breathable PFAS-free fabrics to regulate airflow and control both heat and water vapor management. Airmap clothing seeks to find an ideal balance between rain/wind protection and ventilation, which makes for versatile garments that should ride well in variable weather conditions.

Airmap aims to control how air flows over various areas of your body; Panels are placed to block air from the direction of travel, exchange heat, and moisture, and manage water/perspiration on the inside and outside. 7mesh wants to save you the trouble of adding or removing layers during a ride, so the Airmap clothing regulates moisture and temperature as much as possible.

7mesh Airmap clothing, road rider

7mesh has developed three Airmap fabrics, with single, double and triple layer construction. The three-layer fabric offers weatherproof protection, the double-layer fabric provides wind resistance, and the single-layer fabric offers the most breathability and air permeability possible. By placing panels of each strategically, 7mesh can optimize weather resistance and breathability where each is required for the Airmap garments.

Sharing the same outer face, all three Airmap fabrics appear identical so the clothing looks completely uniform despite the use of several different fabrics.

7mesh Airmap Cache Anorak, on woman

All Airmap fabrics are not only PFAS/PFC-free, but they are also Bluesign and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified. Furthermore, the polyester and polyurethane used for Airmap clothing is recycled material. All of the new Airmap pieces are available in men’s and women’s styles. All garments come in men’s and women’s sizes XS-XXL.

MTB/Gravel/Adventure Clothing:

Cache Jacket – $300

7mesh Airmap Cache Jacket, womens

The Cache Jacket is a hoodless style that uses 3-layer Airmap fabric on the body, and 2-layer fabric on the side panels and undersides of the sleeves. The jacket has a full front zipper with a Tricot chin guard, and for storage, you get two hand pockets and an internal chest pocket (all with zip closures).

An elastic drawcord at the waist lets you keep chilly winds at bay, and the jacket’s elastic cuffs slip over gloves easily. The Cache Jacket offers an articulated but relaxed fit, and is finished with reflective logos on the chest and left sleeve.

The Men’s Cache Jacket comes in Prince (purple), Black, or Douglas Fir (green). Women’s color options are Prince or Black.

Cache Anorak – $330

7mesh Airmap Cache Anorak, mens

The Cache Anorak is a ½ zip pullover that features fully taped, 3-layer Airmap on the body for wind and rain resistance, and 2-layer Airmap on the rear side panels, hem and cuffs. A slim, low-profile elastic drawcord at the hem and elastics sewn into the cuffs help keep the elements out and your body warmth in.

The Anorak includes 7mesh’s Stash System straps so you can pack it up into itself and strap it to your frame. The large kangaroo pocket on the front offers zippered access from both sides.

The Cache Anorak provides an articulated but relaxed fit for on or off-bike comfort. 7mesh has added reflective details for rider visibility, and made the inside of the Stash pocket reflective as well. That makes it so you won’t lose track of your jacket when it’s packed up.

Men’s color options are Prince, Butterscotch, or Black. Women’s choices are Butterscotch or Black.

Grit Pant – $300

7mesh Airmap Grit Pant, mens

The Grit Pant is 7mesh’s most durable pant, made mostly from 3-layer Airmap fabric with 2-layer panels on the back of the legs for ventilation. The seams are taped, but also offer stretch to ensure unrestricted movement. The Grit pants feature two zippered hand pockets with mesh sleeves to keep your phone separate from other items.

At the waist you’ll find a zippered fly with a button closure and an ultra-suede hook and ladder adjuster. The Grit pants’ elastic cuffs keep you covered up and make it easy to slip your feet through. These pants offer a Trim fit but with ample room for kneepads. Men’s and Women’s Grit pants come in Black or Shale (grey).

Road/High-Performance Gravel Clothing:

S2S Jersey LS – $300

7mesh Airmap S2S LS Jersey, mens

The long-sleeve S2S Jersey uses all three Airmap fabrics. The body uses 3-layer fabric, the sleeves and back utilize 2-layer Airmap, and the underarms get the most breathable single-layer fabric. The jersey uses a mix of sewn and stretch seams to allow for excellent mobility.

This jersey offers a full two-way front zipper for additional climate control. On the back you’ll find 7mesh’s Anything pockets, which are sewn to resist sagging. The rear hem, sleeve, and chest all bear reflective details. The S2S Jersey provides a trim fit.

Men’s S2S Jerseys are available in Prince, Black, or Butterscotch colors. Women’s versions come in Prince or Black.

S2S Vest – $200

7mesh Airmap S2S Vest, womens

For a sleeveless option, the S2S Vest also makes use of all three Airmap fabrics. The body is made with 3-layer fabric, while the underarms and inside collar use 2-layer fabric. To make the vest more packable, single-layer Airmap is used for the vest’s Stash pocket. The vest can be packed into its side pocket, and strapped to your frame with 7mesh’s Stash System straps. The zippered Stash pocket remains useable for cargo when the vest isn’t packed away.

The trim-fitting S2S Vest has a full-length two-way front zipper with a Tricot chin guard. You’ll also find reflective detailing on the chest, rear hem, and behind the arms. Men’s and women’s color choices are Black or Butterscotch.

Apidura’s latest little Expedition Waist Belt is as simple a wearable storage solution as you could wish for. It’s the most minimalist hip pack imaginable. And it might just save your gravel, bikepacking, or even enduro mountain biking woes.

So, if you’ve taken to riding in more relaxed fit clothes for greater comfort, modesty, or just better style on the bike, Apidura can bring back the classic benefits of 3 good ‘ol rear jersey pockets…

all c. Apidura

Apidura specializes in helping you carry more on your bike rides. Their niche is lightweight, rackless bikepacking. The biggest part of that is probably gravel and off-road adventure riding, where trends are generally moving away from classic fitted lycra jerseys, and more in the direction of more comfortable, looser-fitting shirts and jerseys that also transition well off-the-bike.

But ditching the dedicated cycling jersey for a tech tee often means losing all your pockets, too. Or bikepackers end up overstuffing what pockets they have, from shirts & jerseys to bib shorts cargo pockets.

Apidura Expedition Waist Belt add-on jersey pockets, minimalist hip pack, buckle and belt

So, enter a set of strap-on jersey pockets, with a simple adjustable belt & buckle.

Or as Apidura calls it, the Expedition Waist Belt.

Tech details

The breathable 4-way-stretch padded mesh Apidura Expedition Waist Belt offers 1L of combined storage in 3 jersey-style pockets. Two smaller side hip pockets angle slightly forward, compared to the larger full-height ~13cm tall center pocket. None get any secure closure (like a zip or velcro), instead relying on the stretchy fabric to keep your gear in place.

Claimed weight for the on-bike anatomically cut waist belt is just 70g for S/M or 75g for L/XL

Apidura Expedition Waist Belt – Pricing, Options & Availability

The belt comes in two sizes S/M to fit 75-95cm (29.5-37″) or L/XL to fit 90-105cm (35-41″) circumferences. Keep in mind then, that’s not your waist size necessarily. You need to measure overtop of whatever you want to wear under the waist belt – after all, maybe that’s a pair of bib shorts, just some regular shorts, or several more layers of clothing. You decide.

Apidura Expedition Waist Belt add-on jersey pockets, minimalist hip pack, loaded

It may be simple and light, but the Apidura Expedition Waist Belt still sells for $49 / 38 / 44€ – available from today. Sure, that’s not exactly cheap, but it does give any shirt or jersey classic pockets again.

Restrap Travel bag range, waterproof Utility Hip Pack & Rolltop Backpacks

Bikepacking bag maker Restrap debuts a new versatile Travel pack range with two size adjustable Rolltop Backpacks and a great little Utility Hip Pack that transitions nearly seamlessly from your waist to your handlebar. I’ve just got the hip pack and larger 22L backpack in, and have already put them to use on & off the bike. Take a closer look…

Restrap Travel Packs, a waterproof hip bag & two backpacks

Restrap adding a new Travel Range is their way of blurring the lines between what you carry on or off the bike, adapting lessons learned making bikepacking bags for use while not necessarily cycling. Both the new hip pack and backpacks are meant to be used off-the-bike, but Restrap certainly tweaked them for use while cycling, too.

Restrap Utility Hip Pack – 6L

Restrap waterproof Utility Hip Pack

Let’s start with the hip bag.

Depending on when you look at it, the new 6L Utility Hip Pack could be confused for a pretty common fanny pack or a mini roll-top handlebar bag. It’s the way it transitions back and forth so smoothly that makes it unique. Sure, I’ve seen ‘hacks’ of people strapping their hip bag to the bar. And I’ve seen bar bags attached to a regular belt to carry them off-the-bike. But this solution is so much cleaner and more satisfying.

Restrap waterproof Utility Hip Pack, on-bike back

The secret is that the rear mesh back pad that sits against your waist is actually hinged from the top and secured in place with a big velcro patch.

Restrap waterproof Utility Hip Pack, on-bike mode

In bar bag mode, the proper padded waist belt gets folded securely out of the way. Then, you just tighten the two Restrap Fast Straps around your bar, and loop the bungee cord around your stem to keep it from bouncing.

In hip pack mode, the waist belt comes out, the little bungee gets tucked under the velcro, and away you go.

Restrap waterproof Utility Hip Pack, on bike roll-top

Material-wise, Restrap makes the hip pack from a heavy-duty durable TPU fabric, with taped seams for a fully waterproof construction, and bright orange lining. It gets a full-width top opening roll-top, with a plastic structure around the opening to help close it, and a magnetic Fidlock buckle closure. And reflective stitching in the straps boosts low-light visibility.

Restrap waterproof Utility Hip Pack, 403g actual weight

The boxy bag is 24x18x12cm overall for 6L of storage including the two outer mesh side pockets. Restrap claims a weight of just 361g, but my sample bag weighed a bit more at 403g including the two 17cm orange Fast Straps to secure it around the handlebar.

The new Restrap Utility Hip Pack is available today direct from Restrap for $143 / £95 / 114€ in either this white or an all-black version.

Restrap Rolltop Backpacks – 22L & 40L

Restrap calls these the “ultimate backpack for use both on and off the bike”, designed for bike commuter use or just any time you want to carry goodies on your back.

Available in two sizes, the Rolltop Backpacks are built to be waterproof, comfortable cycling or walking, and tough enough to stand up to everyday use & abuse. Then, external compression straps on each side let you cinch the backpacks down so they don’t flop around even when they aren’t stuffed full of gear.

Restrap waterproof Rolltop Backpack 40L, 13" laptop in sleeve

The two sizes each include an internal padded 15″ laptop sleeve and an internal mesh side organizer pocket with a key lanyard, both with external zip access and Restrap’s small “safety retention loop to protect against theft”. The larger 40L pack also adds an extra internal side pocket and another outer side pocket for further organization.

Tech details, Pricing

Restrap waterproof Rolltop Backpack 40L, riding

Materials are essentially the same as the hip pack. Restrap makes the backpacks from the same heavy-duty TPU fabric, and tapes the seams for fully waterproof construction. Everything inside is lined with slippery orange nylon that makes it easy to find items inside and slip things in & out. The backpacks get full-width roll-top openings, closer with an adjustable strap & magnetic Fidlock buckle.

Restrap waterproof Rolltop Backpack 40L, side details

They also feature a fully padded flat airmesh back panel and shoulder straps, plus a removable waist belt, and 3-position adjustable sternum straps to provide stability. Then, there are also various extra D-rings and Molle system daisy chain attachments to mount other accessories, too. Again, some limited reflective stitching in some of the straps and the small paracord zipper plus improve night visibility.

Restrap waterproof Rolltop Backpack 40L,1133g actual weight

The smaller max 22L bag is 45cm tall when closed, 26cm wide & 15cm deep, with a claimed weight of 770g. The larger max 40L bag is 50cm tall when closed, 30cm wide & 22cm deep, with a claimed weight of 980g. But, our sample 40L bag was again quite a bit heavier than anticipated at 1130g.

The new Restrap Travel range Rolltop Backpacks are available today from direct for $278 / £185 / 222€ for the smaller 22L or for $315 / £210 / 250€ for the larger 40L variant. Both come in either this white or an all-black version.

First Looks

Restrap Travel bag range, waterproof Utility Hip Pack & Rolltop Backpacks, riding

Thinking about it I have to say, I’m a bit surprised that Restrap hadn’t really gotten into ‘on-body’ bags yet, after testing out a number of their ‘on-bike’ backpacking bags. I’ve been impressed with almost every Restrap bag I’ve tried. Generally, a bit on the heavier side – prioritizing craftsmanship & durability over ultra-lightweight or flimsy fasteners – they’ve all held up well to my sometimes rough abuse. And while they aren’t cheap, Restrap’s prices are competitive, and the bags are actually all handmade in the UK at a time when most gear is still made anonymously somewhere on the other side of the planet.

These bags seem to hit on all of that, in all the best ways. Sure, they aren’t cheap, but they feel really well-made and durable.

Restrap Travel bag range, waterproof Utility Hip Pack & Rolltop Backpacks, riding

I get the sense that this backpack is going to become my new favorite for my regular travels. It has plenty of good pockets to keep me a bit organized, without going overkill. And the external access for both the laptop sleeve and the mesh internal side pocket feels great. Plus, it compresses down so neatly that I feel like it can go from carrying just 10 or 20L on a regular basis, then balloon up to the full 40L when needed. And it looks good both compressed and fully maxed out.

It even stays put and feels good on the bike.

Restrap Travel bag range, waterproof Utility Hip Pack, on bike

As for the Utility Hip Pack, well that’s a more complicated story. But still a very good one.

I had lower expectations of this bag and a bit of skepticism to be honest. You know – a jack of all trades, master of none – kinda thing. But it has proven me wrong, ending up as versatile and functional in both on-bike and on-body modes. Anyone remember the expanded ‘original‘ version of that figure of speech? I’ve only really started to use the Utility Hip Pack and to test what I can carry comfortably and securely.

Restrap Travel bag range, waterproof Utility Hip Pack, POV

But already it warrants a more detailed review. I think I like it a lot, and will certainly keep playing with it.

Restrap Travel – Availability & a bonus

Restrap Travel bag range, waterproof Utility Hip Pack & Rolltop Backpacks, further testing

In the meantime, all three new Restrap Travel packs are available now directly from Restrap and their partner retailers.

Restrap also has one extra bonus gadget hidden in with this release – a new $11/ £6 / 9€ Light Mount. It’s really just a small plastic cylinder that can bolt onto any unused frame or fork rack, fender, or cage braze-on to give you somewhere else to attach any accessory meant to strap around a handlebar of seatpost.

Restrap bikepacking Light Mount gadget

Since Restrap specializes in making bikepacking bags, they know that when you strap bags on your bike oftentimes you lose good spots to mount forward- or rear-facing lights. So this little 15g plastic doodad creates a mounting spot you can add away from any bags in the way. It also includes teeth that will fit the plastic Shimano crank axle/BB pre-loader in case you ever need to tighten or remove a crankset on the go.

Listen up if you like all your accessories in one place (and ride a Bontrager saddle). Bontrager just launched a new Blendr saddle bag with a compatible fender. This new Blendr setup can stash your tools, keep your backside dry, and keep you flashy with a rear light attachment.

Bontrager Blendr Bag and Fendr Header

What is it? Bontrager Bendr Saddle Bag

Yes — it’s a saddle bag, but it’s more than that. The new Blendr bag from Bontrager works seamlessly with the brand’s lights and all-new clip-on fender. The selling point is the ease of on/off for the other accessories.

The Blendr saddle bag is a fairly straightforward design internally. The slightly padded, water-resistant bag holds a place for tools, Co2, and other trailside maintenance needs. The bag comes in three different sizes: Small (.29L), Medium (.5L), and Large (1L). We received a medium-sized bag, which can easily fit most of what I take for a gravel ride.

My packing list usually includes a small multi-tool, tube, Co2 and head, tire levers, Dyna-Plag tool, and some cash if I’m lucky. The medium-sized bag is the catch-all for many riders, though I can see the utility in a small, uber-efficient road bag and an all-day exploration large bag.

Bontrager Blendr Bag and Fendr bag side

The Blendr bag attaches using two-bolts 5m hex bolts and mounts securely to most (not all) Bontrager saddles. It’s worth noting that we tried to see if the mount would also attach to Specialized saddles with a similar horizontal-two-bolt design. The Specialized SWAT bolt pattern is wider than the Blendr mount, meaning you must have a Bontrager saddle for these accessories.

Furthermore, the new Blendr bag only works with Bontrager Aeolus, Verse, Boulevard, and Commuter saddles and is incompatible with Bontrager RSL-level saddles. Bontager also states the Blendr Bag is not for use on mountain bikes. This note is a bummer because the Fender mount would be convenient for off-road.

Trek Blendr Fendr Aeolus Adapter installed

The bag has a secondary strap that attaches to the rails of the post to give the pack more stability. The strap is the same material used for the Blendr lights and is easy to install around larger seat posts, like one on the new Trek Madone SL 7.

Bontrager Blendr Bag and Fendr full bag top

Bontrager Blendr Bag Details:

  • Sizes: Small (.29L), Medium (.5L) and Large (1L)
  • Saddle Compatibility: Bontrager Aeolus, Verse, Boulevard, and Commuter saddles
  • Price: Small: $59.00, Medium: $64.00, Large: $69.00
Bontrager Blendr Bag and Fendr solo fender

Bontrager Blendr Fendr

Have you ever tried to get a fender on your bike with a saddle bag? It’s rough, even with the pocket-size ones. Bontrager Blendr Fender could make protecting your posterior easier without needing straps and zip ties.

Trek Blendr Fendr Aeolus Adapter light

The new Blendr Fender uses the Bontrager Blendr mount to attach and install easily. The fender is 8 inches long, and tappers from 4 to 2.5 inches at the tail. The coverage is on par with most stubby rear fenders and should keep riders dry for commutes and training.

The body of the fender is compact enough to store in a commuter bag or jersey pocket with little to no extra bulk. The fender also has a mount for a Blendr light, making it easy to be seen. We love the addition of the light mount, but depending on the angle of your saddle, the fender might block some of the visibility of the light. It would be nice to see some adjustability of the fender (and therefore the light) to maintain proper visibility for all. The adjustment on the bracket allows you to move the position of the bag, but the light and fender are fixed.

The Blendr Fender is sold separately for $15.00, so if you’re committed to the Blendr life, this could be your new bad-weather training buddy.

Price: $15.00

Bontrager Blendr Bag and Fendr tape all

Bontrager EcoTack Recycled Bar Tape

Bontrager’s newest bar tape is made from partially recycled materials and delivers a nice tactile feel with a grippy exterior. The tape is designed for all-around riding, not just commuting or the racer life.

Bontrager Blendr Bag and Fendr bar tape

The Eco-Tape boasts 3mm of shock-absorbing foam, right in the middle for most bar tapes nowadays. The tape composition is 45% recycled materials and 29% biobased foam. The top layer is tacky but doesn’t hinder the stretchy nature of the tape while wrapping bars.

Bontrager Blendr Bag and Fendr tape close up

The EcoTack Bar Tape comes in at $34.00, putting it on the more premium side of Bontrager bar tape. We’ve had very little time on the EcoTack Bar Tape yet, so we can’t genuinely speak to the performance or longevity of the material. It is nearly $10 more than the Bontrager gel tape, but we have a sneaking suspicion that this Tack Tape will replace the current (non-recycled) bar tape in the Bontrager lineup.

Bontrager Blendr Bag and Fendr tape sticky

The EcoTack Bar Tape comes in five colors, including Classic Black, White, Power Surge (Green), Keswick (Olive), and Azure (Baby Blue).

Bontrager EcoTack Bar Tape:

  • Colors: Black, White, Power Surge, Keswick and Azure
  • Price: $34.00
  • Weight: 108g

Whether gearing up for a multi-day bikepacking trip or just a big day out, cargo cages make it easier to carry more. An obvious addition to their Morse bottle cage lineup, the new cargo cage is typically Wolf Tooth – meaning well thought out and packed with versatility.

Morse cages get their name from the dot-dash mounting pattern. The Cargo cage is no different with four different bolt-hole combinations for the standard 64mm bottle boss spacing. It will also fit on three-pack mounting, and offers up to 35mm of vertical adjustment thanks to the Morse pattern.

For more versatility, the cage also has mounting holes on the left or right side of the cage which allows it to be mounted at an angle. WTC says this is great for forks that have mounting bolts on the front or back of the fork leg, and will even allow you to mount two cages next to each other in certain situations. The cages are made in Minnesota, USA from 5052 aluminum.

Along with the bottle cage, WTC is introducing its own Cargo straps that will be sold with the cages or separately. With the addition of the straps, you can carry 32oz Nalgene bottles, stuff sacks, burritos, you name it.

Available now, Wolf Tooth will sell the cages alone or with two cargo straps.

WTC Morse Cargo Cage Specs

  • Vertical positioning adjustment up to 35mm with Morse dot-dash mount pattern
  • Mount options in center of cage, as well as on right and left sides
  • Designed to fit fork bags, 32 oz. Nalgene bottles, and more
  • Three stainless steel bolts included
  • Cage weighs 60g without straps or bolts
  • Made in Minnesota, USA
  • Replacement parts available
  • Pricing:
    • Morse Cargo Cage: $39.95 USD
    • Morse Cargo Cage + two Cargo Straps: $51.95 USD

Without the extra weight of a full chinbar, or the resulting reduced airflow, the new 3/4-shell Etna helmet promises extra mountain biking protection without a lot of downsides…

Limar Etna + MIPS 3/4 shell enduro mountain bike helmet

Limar developed the new Etna + MIPS enduro helmet to offer extra protection and an enhanced sense of security for more technical trail riding, without the hot & heavy feel of a full face.

What’s new?

Limar Etna MIPS three quarter shell lightweight vented enduro mountain bike helmet, riding from the side
all c. Limar

Starting with the same upper half shell as their recent Tonale trail bike helmet, the new Etna straps on extended ear & upper jaw protection. A safer helmet for a surprisingly affordable twenty bucks extra. The secret is what Limar calls the Proxear coverage system.

Limar Etna MIPS 3/4-shell lightweight vented enduro mountain bike helmet, Exoear ear protectors

Proxear integrates a thin semi-rigid structure into the overall in-mold shell of the helmet. Then, it loops around protecting both your ears and the joint at the top of your jaw from direct impacts. A large opening still lets your ears shed heat. Then, thin padding ensures a comfortable fit and even pressure distribution in an impact. All of that, without the feeling of a big squishy sponge against your cheek. There’s also a cutout at the top of the pad so the helmet doesn’t press against the arms of your sunglasses.

Additionally, you get a chin strap upgrade with the excellent and easy-to-use Fidlock magnetic buckle.

Tech details

Like the Tonale, you get the same 4 large front vents, 2 small vents over your brow, 4 over the top of the shell, four main internal channels, and 5 exhaust vents at the rear. Vent-wise, the top half of the helmet is identical to the Tonale. Thus, the Etna also features the same height-adjustable Air Fit Evo dial retention system.

Velocio Off-Road Equipment, woman riding

Velocio’s new collection of Off-Road Equipment includes MTB-specific pants, shorts, jackets, jerseys, and a bibshort. The Off-Road Equipment clothing is divided into three lines; Access, Ultralight, and Trail. It’s worth noting these categories are a bit blurry and not specific to different riding disciplines, in fact, Velocio suggests mixing and matching pieces from each. Basically, no matter what terrain you ride, any line might have something for you – and that’s regardless of gender too, as all the new items come in men’s and women’s models.

Velocio Off-Road Equipment, man and woman

The new clothing offers the fit and performance of high-end racing gear, but with subtle styling that looks good on your local trails. Instead of Velocio’s usual tricolor flag and ‘Ci’ logo, the Off-Road gear will bear a new mountain label and revised logo.

If you like supporting sustainable practices, you’ll be happy to know this; Velocio not only makes their clothing with recycled materials and natural ethically sourced fibers, but they also use compostable packaging and offer repair services for their garments. All items in the new MTB collection are also PFA/PFC free.

Trail ACCESS Hardshell jacket – $389

Velocio Trail ACCESS Hardshell Jacket, front

While most of the new Off-Road Equipment pieces are available now, The Trail ACCESS Hardshell jacket will be released in late September. Velocio’s most advanced MTB outer layer, the Trail ACCESS Hardshell Jacket is made for the harshest conditions, starting with a Pertex Shield Air three-layer outer fabric. This fabric offers 10k waterproofing and 30k breathability, plus mechanical stretch.

The Trail ACCESS Hardshell Jacket is lightweight and packable, and offers a relaxed pre-shaped cut. Its hood is helmet-compatible and multi-point adjustable, and the low-profile sleeve cuffs are designed to work well with or without gloves.

Velocio Trail ACCESS Hardshell Jacket, back

For storage, you get two zippered pockets on the front (with laser-cut vents inside), a zippered internal pocket with a media port, and a back pocket with a waterproof zipper. That’s all the info we have on this item for now!

Trail ACCESS Pant – $199

Velocio Off-Road Equipment, Arcade belt

Instead of devising a waist-cinching system, Velocio went with an idea that might sound odd at first; All new Velocio off-road pants and shorts come with belt loops and special edition matching belts from Velocio/Arcade. Who wants to ride with a belt, you might think? It’s not so crazy with Arcade’s belts, which feature low-profile buckles and stretch fabrics.

Velocio Trail ACCESS Pant

The Trail ACCESS pant is a lightweight yet durable pant designed for year-round riding. They are constructed from two Italian-milled Cordura fabrics; The main one is a lightweight double-weave fabric, and high-wear areas get a ripstop weave fabric. The pants are coated with a C0 DWR treatment for water resistance.

Velocio kept the pants’ seams to a minimum and designed the pockets to minimize movement from whatever items you’re carrying. The pants feature a pre-shaped cut that allows room for kneepads, and the legs taper down to the ankles.

Velocio Trail ACCESS Pant, back, wmns

Color options for men’s and women’s models are Black or Dark Olive.

Trail ACCESS Short – $179

Velocio Trail ACCESS short, front, wmns

The Trail ACCESS Short is a durable option for the trails or the bike parks. The main fabric is a stretch-woven double-weave Cordura, which remains fairly lightweight at 170gsm. The shorts are C0 DWR treated, and like the pants above Velocio has avoided extra seams wherever possible. The shorts offer extended front leg panels to prevent kneepad gaps, and two extra deep zippered front pockets.

There are four color options for men or women; Black, Black Cherry, Army, and Moonrock.

Ultralight Trail Hooded jacket – $189

Velocio Ultralight Trail Hooded jacket, front

The Ultralight Trail Hooded jacket is light but could be layered for any time of year, and is made from windproof and water-resistant Pertex Quantum Air fabric. This fabric is very lightweight (50gsm), offers all-around stretch, and is air-permeable to ensure good breathability. It also comes treated with a C0 DWR finish.

Velocio Ultralight Trail Hooded jacket, back, wmns

The Ultralight Trail Hooded Jacket provides an articulated, pre-shaped cut for excellent mobility. There’s also an elastic hood that fits over a helmet. There’s a zippered pocket on the back, an internal pocket with a media port for storage. The front zipper is a two-way type for versatile venting or fit options.

Men’s and ladies’ color options are Charcoal, Fire Red or Moonrock.

Ultralight Trail Short – $159

Velocio Ultralight Trail short, side

The Ultralight Trail shorts offer a ‘barely there’ feel with an Italian Ultralight Stretch woven fabric weighing in at 115gsm. The shorts offer a streamlined, pre-shaped fit designed for unrestricted pedaling motion. Velocio says they will accommodate low-profile kneepads.

These shorts are C0 DWR treated, and feature the same minimized seam construction and pockets. The pockets help keep your cargo from moving around as the Trail ACCESS pants. Color options (men’s and women’s) are Black, Light Olive, or Black Cherry.

The Ultralight clothing line also includes the Indigo Dye Ultralight Trail jersey (check out Velocio’s website for info on the jerseys).

Trail Mesh Bib Liner – $129

Velocio Trail Mesh Bib Liner

Last up, the Trail Mesh Bib Liner provides saddle comfort while keeping you as cool as possible. These bibshorts use the same top-notch dual-density chamois found in Velocio’s Signature bibs. Of course, you’ll also find the brand’s proven fit, straps, and leg grippers.

Velocio bibs are light & cool with full mesh construction and microfiber strap uppers; even the two cargo pockets on the outsides of both legs are made of mesh. The men’s and women’s Trail Mesh Bib Liners are available in Black only.

Finally, the new Trail line also includes the Delta Trail LS jersey, Merino Trail LS jersey, and Micromodal Trail jersey.

It’s available in two colorways – full color and white – and comes in men’s and women’s versions on their 37.5 Summit Aero Mesh Jersey, which is incredible for really hot days, and the more traditional Ascent Aero Jersey. When describing the design for the collection, Welzie describes the design as “a whole bunch of sharks, different colors, all coming together to create one piece of art that’s happy. That’s like Lahaina, a little melting pot. That community is together, especially now, as we all work on getting our smiles back.”

The jerseys are offered at discounted prices, ranging from $110 to $125, and they also have Run Tees for $60. Available while supplies last.

Going big but not that big? Or just prefer the added ventilation and easy-drinking style of an open face helmet instead of a full face? The new Kali Invader open face helmet delivers deep coverage without sacrificing great breathability and all of the unique protective features Kali’s known for.

kali OF invader open face trail to enduro mountain bike helmet shown on riders

The OF Invader has their Composite Fusion shell, which uses a thinner shell fused to the EPS foam underneath to create a one-piece structure.

kali OF invader open face trail to enduro mountain bike helmet

Inside is their RHEON low density cushioning layer that pulls double duty. First, it mitigates low-speed impacts with a softer material, and does so better than standard pads found in most helmets.

Second, it provides non-linear and rotational impact protection because it can squirm and bend, letting the helmet move more than your head and thus potentially decreasing the impact forces that make it to your brain.

It comes in matte black only, with an adjustable visor and Fidlock magnetic buckle closure. Two sizes are offered, each with three sets of cheek pads so you can fine tune the fit (and pull them off to wash them).

Claimed weight is 640g and it’s aimed at aggressive trail and big mountain riders, but is not ASTM rated for downhill riding. MSRP is $225 and includes their Lifetime Crash Replacement guarantee.

Kali Interceptor 2.0

Coming in a lot lighter at 390g, the Intercepter 2.0 updates one of their best trail mountain bike helmets with RHEON padding, swappable standard and bug mesh padding, gripper panels to hold your sunglasses, and more.

The Interceptor 2.0 also gets Kali’s Bonehead Nano Fusion tech, which uses dual density EPS foams inside the shell, with cone-shaped patterns that help spread impact forces across a broader area to dissipate them before they reach your head.

kali interceptor 2 trail MTB helmet

It also gets the Fidlock magnetic buckle and has deep rear coverage, but is open over the ears and has a ton of vents for great air flow. MSRP is $180 and comes in two colors and two sizes, S/M and L/XL.

Adidas SP0057 sunglasses, SF, spring ride

The right pair of sunglasses can reduce eye strain in bright sunshine or rapidly changing light conditions. Even more important though, they can keep your eyes protected from the sun and trail debris.

I got a pair of Adidas SP0057 sunglasses with a rose photochromic lens and was pleased with their versatility and protection. Aside from a small issue with the arms being a bit wide for me, I was happy with the photochromic lens’ versatility, the lens’ coverage, and the secure fit the SP0057 provided.

Adidas SP0057 Sunglasses – Construction:

Adidas SP0057 sunglasses, front

The SP0057s come with several lens options, but my test pair was equipped with the rose photochromic lens, with a transmission range of 1-3. Adidas describes this range offering ‘limited protection’ to ‘high protection’ against sun glare.

A lightweight, flexible TR90 wrap frame offers a full-rim fit around the Adidas Shield lens. To prevent condensation, the frames feature ‘Dynamic Aeration Technology’, which is one hell of a way to say Adidas put nine vent holes across the top to keep condensation from building up.

Adidas SP0057 sunglasses, backside

The SP0057’s adjustable rubber nose pads provide a custom fit, and they’re designed not to leave marks on your nose even after several hours of use. The little stripes on the inside help channel sweat away, and there’s a small ventilation hole in each nose pad too.

The arms on the SP0057 include flexible temples with rubber insides for comfort and grip. Adidas’ Security Block arm hinges hold the arms in either open or closed positions. This ensures the temples don’t contact the lenses when the sunglasses are folded up, and Adidas says the hinge is much more durable than other designs.

The SP0057s are considered a unisex model, and they come in one size – Arm length is 140mm, and lens width is 131mm. Adidas offers the SP0057s with a wide selection of frame colors and lens combinations, so check out their website for all the options. MSRP is $175, and they are covered by a two-year warranty.

Adidas SP0057 sunglasses, on scale

The SP0057s are listed at 32g, but weighed 31g on my scale! It’s not the 22g weight of the POC Elicit Ti 3D printed glasses, but they’re not $400 either.

Ride Impressions:

Adidas SP0057 sunglasses, SF, descending

Out of the box, the SP0057s sat crooked, but the adjustable nose pads allowed them to sit straight. After a few minutes of fiddling, they aligned nicely and the nose pads stayed in place after my initial adjustment.

The SP0057’s frames are quite large but not invisible – I can easily see all sides of the frames if I try. But they’re big enough to offer a good field-of-view and not be distracting while you ride.

Adidas SP0057 sunglasses, with helmet

I tested the fit of the SP0057s with four different open-faced helmets, and they fit well with two out of four. My ABUS MoDrop and Oakley DRT5 both easily accommodated the SP0057s. They almost fit my POC Kortal Race MIPS, but the arms are wide enough to slightly contact the helmet near my temples. I did not have success with my Endura MT500, as its shell sits very low on my head and leaves no room for the sunglasses’ arms. It’s worth noting the MT500 is the deepest fitting shell I have, as my head is on the small end of their size medium range.

The SP0057’s have a generous hook on the end of the arms. Depending on how your helmet fits you may have to put them on starting with the hook first.

The Lens

Adidas SP0057 sunglasses, tinted
This is the darkest tint I could get from the SP0057s, but it still helped in bright conditions.

At first, I didn’t think I was seeing much action from the rose photochromic lens. While Adidas advertises their light range as 1-3, which is the same as a pair of Julbo sunglasses I was also testing, the SP0057 definitely did not provide as wide a transmission range as the Julbos. At this point I thought the SP0057’s would not be ideal for bright sunny days…

However, I soon got a perfect day to test them out, with conditions varying from cloudy to sunny. When I got home I was much happier with them than expected. They provide just enough shade that your eyes can relax in sunny conditions. When the clouds come in (or you duck into the deep woods) they keep things bright enough for unimpeded vision. The rose photochromic lens is a versatile option, as it can handle direct sun but is ideal for low-light.

Sunglasses for Whistler

Adidas SP0057 sunglasses, SF climbing

On that note, I finally got to test the SP0057’s in dim, rainy conditions during Crankworx Whistler. The lens was a good choice for that ride, keeping things looking clear and bright in the deep forest.

It was a warm, humid day and lightly raining through half of the Crankworx ride. The SP0057s did get foggy whenever I stopped moving. But as soon as I got rolling they cleared up quickly.

The size and shape of the Shield lens provides a protective feel, keeping wind and mud splatters off my eyes. I think Adidas found a good shape that provides generous coverage without being excessively large.

The Fit

Adidas SP0057 sunglasses, arm on me

I did have one comfort issue with the SP0057s, but thankfully, not a serious one. The width of the arms is a bit excessive for my narrow head. As a result, I found the arms were pushing my ears outwards just a bit. On one fairly short ride, I came home with sore spots on my ears, but it wasn’t a consistent issue. I went for a longer ride another day and experienced no soreness or irritation at all. The bottom line is the issue is minor enough that I’ll still take these for a ride anytime.

Anyone with a wider head than me would not likely have this issue, but if you’ve got a narrow noggin it’s something to consider. Adidas lists the width of the SP0057s at 131mm, but that’s the lens: At the widest point (near the ears), the arms measure roughly 150mm in width.

Adidas SP0057 sunglasses, with case and cloth

Aside from the somewhat wide arms, I have no real complaints about the SP0057’s. They are nice and lightweight, and they don’t move around at all while I ride. The rubber nose piece and temples do a great job of not slipping, even when you get sweaty. Last but not least I like the styling, which is simple and not too extreme for casual, everyday use.

Leap Components is manufacturing some neat aftermarket alternatives for AXS Shifters, AXS Dropper Remotes, Wireless Blips and AXS Battery Mounts out of their facility in the Netherlands. All are 3D Printed from a CF15 carbon-filled Nylon, and offer riders of SRAM’s electronic drivetrains the ability to customize their cockpit with alternative looks and ergonomics.

Here’s a quick look at the Leap Components range.

leap components quickshift axs pad alternative ergonomics

Leap Components 3D Printed Buttons for SRAM AXS

The Quickshift is Leap Components’ alternative shifter button for SRAM AXS drivetrains. In contrast to the standard SRAM GX AXS shifter, the up- and down-shift buttons have a slightly different shape. They are arranged such that they sit beside one another, rather than stacked on a single paddle. Like we see on the standard AXS option, the rear button can be actuated from the front by the rider’s thumb, or from the rear by the rider’s index finger.

The Leap Components Quickshift is compatible with the AXS GX, XX1 and X01 shifters. Leap claim it offers better ergonomics and that it eliminates the “annoying play of the standard button”. The brand offer two options; without the optional spring installed, the force required to actuate a shift is around 70% of the force required to actuate a shift using the standard button. Meanwhile, with the spring installed, the force requirement is the same.

Leap’s 3D printed alternative to SRAM AXS shifter buttons retails at €28.93. You can custom engrave the part with text or a logo for an extra €4.

leap components quickshift alternative axs button remote pad

Leap Components offer something similar for the SRAM AXS Dropper Remote – the Quickshift Seatshift. It too can be installed with or without the spring for a customized actuation feel. Pick it up for €14.88.

You can also purchase Quickshift and Seatshift buttons as a combo for €41.32

Leap Components Wireless Blip Alternatives

There’s 3D printed alternatives for the SRAM Wireless Blips, too. They have on-bar mounts; one for accomodating a single Blip, and another for accomodating two Blips. The mounts are available in 22.2 mm for MTB bars and 23.6 mm for gravel bars. A pair of single mounts and buttons retails at €23.14 for the single mount option. The Blipshift Mount with two buttons installed retails at the same price.

Leap Components also produce a Wireless Blip Mount for TT bars, too. This is available in a standard option, or a 45 degree option, allowing riders to customize the ergonomics to their liking. A pair will set you back €25.62.

More Neat Solutions from Leap Components

Leap also offer a neat solution for storing a spare AXS battery underneath the saddle. The mount fits all standard 7mm rails. Furthermore, it has an integrated valve core removal tool, and space to accomodate a spare SRAM Powerlink. Leap say it forms a watertight seal with the battery, and on the rear there is a little slider that the rider can use to remind themselves of the battery’s status; charged or empty. And, there’s an optional IP64 watertight Airtag holder to go with it.

Of course, it doesn’t actually fit onto RockShox Reverb AXS dropper seat posts. Leap sell the SRAM AXS Battery Saddle Mount for €18.18, without the AirTag, chain link, or PH1 bit required to install it. Get those at an additional cost.

leap components garmin mount
There’s a Leap Components Garmin and Wahoo click-in frame mount, too, available in 10 sizes.

Also of note is the SRAM AXS Derailleur bushing repair kit for GX, X01 and XX1, a very nice addition that will help riders prolong the usable lifetime of their expensive electronic drivetrain.

Five bushing sets, a replacement rod, with the mounting bolt and retainer rings, spring tool and 3.9 mm drill bit will set you back €73.55. That said, you don’t have to buy all of the above; Leap sell each of these items independently, with the five bushing sets alone costing €47.93.

And, there’s more to come. Leap is working on alternatives for the GX and X01/XX1 pod shifters, stating they believe they can make them much better. They are also teasing a shifter with integrated dropper seat post.

Squid Bikes and Ass Savers have teamed up for a colorful collaboration to create 128 unique art designs for the popular strap-on Win Wing gravel bike fender. Each recycled plastic blank was individually hand-painted in Northern California in Squid’s beautifully chaotic rattle-can style, then headed back to Sweden for the final steps to turn it into a lightweight fender to strap onto your bike.

How else can you save your ass with a 1-of-a-kind piece of art for just thirty bucks!?

Limited edition Ass Savers x Squid Win Wing Gravel bike fender

We already know the 72g Ass Savers Win Wing Gravel fender very well. It’s my go-to for rear-end protection since last summer on every gravel bike I ride.

Just a bit more complex than the OG Ass Saver that clipped under your saddle, the Win Wing offers a lot more protection at just a little more weight & cost. It also still manages to fit pretty much every gravel bike we tried it with. And in addition, we’ve also seen how it can better protect dropper posts and rear suspension, too.

As for Squid, besides that cute logo, we love their unabashed adoption of colorful spray paint styling. Whether that’s the cartoonish DIY graphics we first saw from them almost a decade ago, or more recent graffiti- and late-80s splatter-inspired artwork. I mean, why do all bikes have to look the same, right?

Ass Savers x Squid Availability

Anyway, now you don’t need to go wild with a Spray.Bike rattle can to make your bike look unique. Just buy a $30 limited edition Ass Savers x Squid Win Wing Gravel fender. Squid made only 128 individual designs, in 1 of 30 different color combinations and general patterns. For that reason, some will look similar, but no two are the same.

You can only get them directly from Squid Bikes, and only until all 128 sell out. Generally, Squid’s idea is you just say yes to buying one, and they’ll ship you some random style. But you can ask for a specific style or color palette when you order, and they’ll work with you.

So, say you miss out on the full Ass Savers x Squid limited artwork Win Wing. You can now also still get something along the same lines direct from Ass Savers. They’ve now also added a more permanent Squid Kollection inspired by the collaboration. These are conventionally screen printed – and less complex – one-color paint web designs. But it means you can pick up a purple Win Wing for gravel or pale red one for road for 26€, or a matching purple Mudder Mini front fender for just 13€.

Apidura’s new Packable Visibility Vest makes sure you are seen without weighing you down or flapping uncontrollably in the wind. That is whether you are racing (and winning) The Transcontinental Race, bikepacking for a long weekend, or just riding your home roads. Apidura adapted lessons learned in developing lightweight hydration vests & backpacks for the Visibility Vest. They created a well-fitted hi-viz vest, so you are seen from all directions while riding from dusk, all through the night, and into the dawn.

You don’t have to be an ultra-distance Audaxer to benefit from extra visibility on dark roads…

Hi-viz vests are a staple of road workers and bicycle commuters alike for one simple reason. Being seen by drivers is a big first step towards staying safe while sharing the road. That’s why Audax rules often require a certified hi-viz vest. And it’s why Apidura developed their Packable Visibility Vest for regular bike commuters, casual road cyclists, and serious long-distance racers.

Apidura Packable Visibility Vest, lightweight road cycling-fitted EN Certified hi-viz vest on body

It’s a lightweight hi-viz solution that packs down into a tiny built-in pouch. That way, you can always have it on those long rides that extend into the dark. It’s also EN 17353 certified so you can use it for your Paris-Brest-Paris audaxing, or just for morning & evening commutes. It’s 360° nighttime visibility that won’t get in the way of you enjoying road riding – year-round and around-the-clock.

Tech details

The minimalist Apidura Packable Visibility Vest is certified to EN 17353:2020 Type B3 standard. That designation is for safe night-time visibility for “medium risk” situations like cycling on unlit roads. That basically means plenty of reflective detailing so you can be seen from all angles. But few cycling-specific solutions are actually EN 17353 certified. And most EN 17353 certified solutions are bulky, unnecessarily heavy, or just uncomfortable to ride in for long distances. The newer EN 17353:2020 Type B3 certification seems to mean it is also compliant with legacy EN 1150 & EN 20471 standards, too.

2023 TCR selfies c. Christoph Strasser

There are countless visibility vests outside of the cycling world that are often fine for casual cycling after dark, but there’s nothing that offers full legal compliance and lightweight materials, packability and a race fit. We know riders and event organisers alike find it frustrating, so we decided to explore how our packable and racing design experience could be brought to bear. EN compliance was essential, but we also wanted to replicate the convenience of a lightweight gilet and make sure the vest was as unobtrusive as possible both while riding and when not in use.

– Betsy Seed, Head of Product, Apidura
Apidura Packable Visibility Vest, lightweight road cycling-fitted EN Certified hi-viz vest, sunset

From my point of view, riding at night is fundamental to endurance racing. It also offers riders the opportunity to experience empty roads, moonlit vistas, and mountain dawns. At Lost Dot we firmly believe that the responsibility for road safety lies firmly with the drivers of vehicles, but we’re also pragmatic and retroreflective garments make a huge difference.

– Andrew Phillips, Race Organizer, Lost Dot

Apidura’s Packable Visibility Vest uses the same anatomic shaping as their Hydration Vest (and newer Hydration Backpack) for a good fit. It uses similar lightweight material & minimalist design as the other Packables. And it features two of the same Packables adjustable sternum straps so it can fit over a thin jersey or a warmer puffy jacket, too. The vest includes no zippers and no velcro – just 2 plastic buckles on straps adjustable to fit different body shapes and genders.

Protection from the wind or rain was not in the design brief. Instead, the vest focuses only on visibility. But that makes it suitable for year-round use, too.

Christoph Strasser Transcontinental winner, 2023 TCR9 kit grid

The hi-viz vest weighs just 106g (claimed for S/M). It packs down into its own 8x12cm rear pocket, to easily fit in a standard jersey pocket. (Specifically, can you spot the tiny packed vest in Christoph Strasser’s TCRNo9 race-winning bikepacking kit grid above?)

Apidura Packable Visibility Vest – Pricing & availability

The Apidura Packable Visibility Vest comes in two sizes – a S/M for 90-105cm & L/XL for 106-122cm chest circumferences. The Visibility Vest is available now direct from Apidura for £45 / $58 / 52€, and through their retail partners.

My question meanwhile is, could Apidura just add all that hi-viz yellow and extra visibility to their regular Racing Hydration Vest to meet that same EN 17353 certification? And make every ultra-distance racer safer in the process?

More Hi-Viz is better if we are sharing the road with cars, right?

Apidura Packable Visibility Vest, fitted hi-viz vest for road cycling, Christoph Strasser Transcontinental TCRNo9 winner, rainy selfie
quick thanks to 2x Transcontinental winner Christoph Strasser for sending us some selfies he took during this year’s win

Thus, here’s a parting enquiry for road & gravel readers:

Would you prefer to have the added visibility all the time? Additionally, would you mind if your regular hydration vest were always hi-viz, even for daytime gravel rides? I suspect most mountain bikers don’t always want a hi-viz hydration pack. That is, based on the number of black, blue, green & red Camelbaks I’ve encountered over the years. Maybe though, for those times roadies & gravel riders do put a pack on their back, they (like me) may actually prefer hi-viz.

So, let us know in the comments below.

Known for offering quality bikes and accessories to the masses at reasonable prices, State Bicycles has released some new goodies that continue that practice. Their new Cargo Cage, Ti Bolts, cargo bib shorts, and house-branded cable-actuated hydraulic brake calipers are here, and as expected, reasonably priced.

Let’s take a look!

State Cargo Cages

State Bicycle Desert Cargo Cage on fork

Retail: $24.99

The Desert Cargo Cages are made from strong, aircraft-grade, 5250 aluminum. State Bikes says that these bad boys are engineered to be both strong and light.

Their design is inspired by the rough and tumble desert of State’s home in Arizona, and are sporting a cool desert scene that is structurally machined into the cage in the right spots.

The cages are a perfect match for the State All-Road Steel Fork or Carbon Monster Fork. Combine the Desert Cage with the two included silicone molded straps and you’re ready for your next adventure.

Desert Cargo Cage Features

  • High-Quality Material: Crafted from 5250 Aluminum (Aircraft Grade).
  • Secure Cargo Straps: Add the Silicon molded straps (22mm x 56cm) allowing you to carry items such as insulated Hydroflasks, small dry bags, or ultralight sleeping pads and shelters.
  • Versatile Mounting Patterns: The State Bicycle Co. Desert Cargo Cage easily mounts to water bottle cage mounts and other unorthodox bolt patterns.
  • Impressive Load Capacity: Despite its lightweight construction, the Desert Cargo Cage can carry up to 25.0 lbs of gear.
  • Lightweight Design: Weight is just 168g (without straps, 246g with straps)

State Titanium Bolts

State Bicycle Ti bolts oil slick mounted
Ti Bolts in the Oil Slick flavor, mounted.

Retail: $12.99 (4-pack)

State Titanium Cage Mounting Bolts will enhance what is an often overlooked upgrade to both add strength and a little bling. These Titanium Bolts are made with Grade 5 titanium and weigh just 1.6g each (steel bolts weigh 3.4g) for unmatched strength-to-weight ratios.

Pick your color with choices of Black, Raw Ti and Oil Slick.

Titanium Bolt Features

  • Unmatched Strength: The Titanium bolts are crafted with Grade 5 Titanium, known for its exceptional strength and durability.
  • Light as a Feather: Titanium is renowned for being incredibly lightweight, and these Titanium bolts are no exception. At just 1.6g each, they are nearly half the weight of standard steel bolts that weigh 3.4g.
  • Corrosion-Resistant: Say farewell to rust and corrosion! Titanium is naturally resistant to environmental elements.
  • Three Stunning Finishes: The Titanium bolts are available in three eye-catching finishes: Oli Slick, Raw Ti, and Black.
  • Universal Compatibility: These Titanium bolts are compatible with any bike featuring standard water bottle cage braze-ons.

State All-Road Disc Calipers

State Bicycle cable actuated hydralic disc brakes mounted

Retail: $59.99 (pair)

State Bike’s Cable-Actuated Hydraulic Disc Brake Caliper can be added to any bike that runs cable-actuated disc brakes. Giving the rider the combined benefits of the cable-actuated disc brake’s reliability, and ease of maintenance, with the performance and stopping power of a hydraulic disc brake, these are a great addition.

State Bicycle cable actuated hydralic disc brake calipers

In addition, these brakes are designed for flat-mount and are recommended to be used with 160mm rotors, but are compatible with 140mm rotors.

They offer dual-moving pistons for even contact on the rotor. Weight is 330g a pair.

Disc Brake Features

  • Cable-Actuated Hydraulic Technology: Benefit from hydraulic brake performance without the need for brake fluid or brake bleeds, simplifying maintenance.
  • Flat Mount Design: The All-Road Disc Brake Caliper features a sleek flat mount design. It seamlessly integrates with all of the State All-Road models.
  • Impressive Braking Power: With the combined advantages of hydraulics and mechanical systems, these calipers “offer remarkable braking power and modulation”.
  • Easy Installation on Your Current Bike: The State Bicycle Co. All-Road Disc Brake Caliper is designed for straightforward installation, with no need for brake fluid or brake bleeds, making it easy to equip your current bike.

State Flat Bar Disc Brakes

State Bicycle hydralic brakes mounted

Retail: $89.99 (Pair of levers and calipers)

These Flat-Bar Hydraulic Brakes, State says, will give you ‘better breaking without breaking the bank”, and it does seem to be a great price. The brakes will be offered in two different, pre-cut hose lengths;

State All-Road Cargo Bib Shorts

State Bicycle Cargo Bibs sitting

Retail: 79.99

Cargo shorts for under $100 is a good thing, and these All-Road Cargo Bibs look like they would be both comfy and functional. You know how I feel about versatility, it’s a good thing. These are designed with a performance cut and feature storage pockets for easy and quick access to goodies on long rides.

State Bikes says that the black will resist fading and the high-grade leg gripper keeps things in place. The bibs are also said to be made with quick-drying, breathable, and sweat-wicking materials.

Like all of their clothing items, State offers a full 1-year warranty, guaranteeing quality and durability.

All-Road Cargo Bib Shorts Features

Topeak Plug N' Tool Mountain

If you hate riding with a backpack, Topeak has some nifty new offerings for you. The brand has hopped on board with on-bike tools, creating three new bar end-mounted tools and a crank spindle chain repair/multi-tool. They also had a new complete plug/multi-tool kit that mounts to your bike and a basic tire plug tool that can inflate a tire while you’re plugging it (if combined with an inflator head).

Plug N’ Tool Mountain- $69.95

Topeak Plug N' Tool Mountain

The Plug N’ Tool Mountain is a two-piece kit that includes a tire plugging tool for one side of your handlebars and a multi-tool for the other side. The plug tool includes a 3.5mm insertion tool and three tire plugs. The multi-tool offers seven tool bits; 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10mm Allen keys, plus a #2 Phillips and T25 Torx bits. The multi-tool’s pivoting head allows for good leverage, and the outside of the head itself acts as the 10mm Allen key. Both tools feature ring-pull knobs for quick and easy removal/reinstallation.

Made from hardened steel and engineering-grade polymer, the Plug N’ Tool Mountain kit weighs 101.5g. The kit should fit any handlebars with inside diameters between 18-21.2mm, and with a minimum of 128mm of straight bar length to accommodate the tools.

Topeak Plug N' Chain Tool

Topeak also sells a Plug N’ Tool Mountain Pro, which is a three-piece set that includes the above two tools, plus the bar-mounted Plug N’ Chain Tool pictured above. The chain tool includes a chain hook and weighs 52g. It is compatible with chains up to 13 speed, including SRAM flat top and Campagnolo hollow-pin chains.

The Plug N’ Tool Mountain Pro kit sells for $99.95. The Plug N’ Chain Tool is also available on its own for $47.95, but to operate it you’ll have to have a 4mm Allen key or multi-tool with you. The chain tool requires a minimum of 105mm of straight handlebar length.

Of course, it is a bit odd to offer three handlebar tools in one kit, when you can only carry two at a time…

BB Hide N’ Tool – $69.95

Topeak BB Hide N' Tool

Conveniently hiding a multi-tool and chain breaker in your crank spindle, the BB Hide N’ Tool allows for trailside chain repairs, and its mini multi-tool provides seven functions. The multi-tool includes 2, 3, 4, 5 and 8mm Allen keys, a T25 Torx bit, and a flathead screwdriver bit. The chain tool is compatible with chains up to 13 speeds, and a chain hook is included to make repairs easier. The BB tool uses a ring-pull knob for easy access and installation.

The BB Hide N’ Tool is made of steel, aluminum, and polymer, and it weighs 82g. It fits hollow crank spindles with at least 124mm of length and with inside diameters between 19-25mm. Topeak lists compatibility with SRAM DUB cranks, Shimano GRX, Deore, SLX, XT, and FSA hollow spindle cranks. In our experience, it does not seem to work with aluminum SRAM Transmission cranks with DUB spindles though, so it’s recommended you measure your spindle before purchasing.

Tubicartridge MT25 – $29.95

Topeak Tubicartridge MT25 w inflator and C02

If you’re just looking for a tire plug tool, the Tubicartridge MT25 has you covered with a plug insertion tool and five spare plugs. However, if you add a Nano Airbooster inflator head and a C02 canister (both sold separately), the combo has a cool trick to offer; Thanks to a small hole at the end of the insertion tool, you can inflate a tire while installing a plug. Please note the above photo shows the Nano Airbooster and a C02 canister attached to the tire plug tool. The Tubicartridge MT25 measures 4.1” long and weighs 54g.

Tubimaster MXT- $114.95

Topeak Tubimaster MXT

The Tubimaster MXT is a frame-mounted kit that includes a Mini 9 Pro multi-tool, a 25g C02 canister, a Nano Airbooster inflator tool, a Tubicartridge MT25 tire plug tool, a small knife for trimming tire plugs, and the mount to carry it all. The Mini 9 Pro multi-tool includes 2, 2.5, 3, 4, and 5mm Allen keys, A T25 Torx bit, a #2 Phillips screwdriver, and tire levers. A grippy strap mounts the kit to your frame or seat post, and the whole kit weighs 335g.

If you’re used to strapping a tool and tube and goodness knows what else to your frame, you’re probably used to those things being muddy, dusty, and squirming around. At least that’s my experience, but the new Peaty’s Holdfast Trail Tool Wrap looks to solve all the problems with current tool wraps and straps.

Featuring a strap plus a separate tool pouch, you put your stuff inside the pouch, which includes an internal zippered waterproof pocket for cash and other valuables, wrap it closed, then strap that to your frame.

Need your stuff? The pouch can be removed without fully removing the strap from your bike, and it has a small Velcro tab so you can hang it from the strap and keep things from spilling all over the ground (or, worse, left behind).

Need a tube? Just strap it against the frame first, then separately wrap the pouch into place, letting you remove the pouch without affecting the tube’s placement. A rubberized backside keeps things from slipping and sliding, and the pouch keeps things (except the tube) clean. The pouch’s material is waterproof, so it’ll shake off a little splash, too.

It comes in three colors and has reflective graphics on the exterior, perfect for adding a bit of side visibility at night. MSRP is £34.99.

Racer Alpha Plastron body armour, front

Within a bevy of booths, there’s always some cool new stuff to find at Crankworx Whistler. While this didn’t seem like the biggest year for expo booths, I sniffed out several new or recently released items including protective gear from Racer, updated cranks from 5DEV and a prototype Cascade Components link kit for the Orbea Rise eMTB.

Racer Protective Gear:

Racer Alpha Plastron body armour, back

Racer’s Alpha Plastron body armor has been available in Europe for a while, but just recently made it to North America. The Alpha Plastron comes with D30 chest and back protectors, but it includes a set of straps that allow the option to use the back protector only. This piece provides CE Level 1 protection and is suitable for men or women.

The flexible and cut-out D30 padding with a lightweight but abrasion-resistant mesh cover ensures minimal weight and optimal breathability. Racer has included a few semi-rigid panels on the chest for additional protection, and there is a small zippered pocket on the lower back to carry ID’s, credit cards or other small items. The Alpha Plastron is available in S/M/L sizes and comes in black only. MSRP is $219 USD.

Racer-Motion-Top-Womens-front

For female riders, Racer offers the Motion Top Women’s. This piece just became available in North America as of June. The Motion Top is similar in construction to the Alpha Plastron, with D30 pads held in place by a lightweight, durable mesh, but it offers complete upper body protection with chest, back, elbow and shoulder pads. The upper chest area features additional EVA padding to protect the pectoral area, and the chest and back protectors have elastic reinforcements to ensure a solid fit. This garment offers CE Level 1 protection.

The Motion Top provides several options; the sleeves can be zipped off if not needed, and all the padding can be used or removed as desired (for washing or riding). The top also comes with an ATR anti-odor and anti-microbial treatment applied.

Racer Motion Top Womens, back

The Motion Top Women’s has three zippered storage pockets (two on the front, one on the back), and if you’re looking to haul some hydration without adding a pack, the back protector’s sleeve can carry a water bladder up to 3L in size. The Motion Top Women’s sells for $229. Sizes S/M/L are available in black only.

Racer Motion 2 Kneepad

Racer also had their new Motion 2 Knees on display, as they were just released in North America on June 21st. Providing Level 1 protection, these pads have a good-sized D30 pad over the knee, and additional padding on the outside of the knee area. Racer says these knees are suitable for everything from trail riding to DH/bike park use. A side zipper makes the Motion 2 knees easy to put on without removing your shoes, and silicone grippers plus Velcro straps at the top and bottom hems should keep them fitting securely for the long haul. I currently have a set of the Motion 2 Kneepads in testing (along with Racer’s Factory gloves), so keep an eye on Bikerumor for my review!

5DEV R-SPEC Cranks:

5DEV R-Spec Cranks

Well known for their unique crank arm design, 5DEV had their new R-SPEC cranks on display. These cranks may look similar to existing models but the R-SPECS have switched from 7050 to 7075 Billet Aluminum.

R-SPEC MTB cranks are available in lengths from 155-175mm, in every 5mm increment. Boost-spaced MTB models can be purchased with either 30mm or 29mm SRAM DUB Boost spindles (SuperBoost options are also available in select sizes). The MTB cranks are compatible with SRAM’s 3-bolt direct mount chainring interface. 5DEV’s website currently shows Matte Raw or Matte Black color options, but there was also a purple set on display at Crankworx, so perhaps we’ll see more options come along.

The R-SPEC eCrank versions for eMTBs will be available for Shimano SP8, Bosch, Brose, and TQ drive systems (although at press time only the EP8 and Brose versions are showing online). The eMTB cranks are offered in 155mm or 160mm options, and current color options are Black or Raw. Prices vary for different models, so check out 5DEV’s website for more info.

Cascade Components’ Orbea Rise Replacement Link:

Cascade Components, prototype link for Orbea Rise eMTB

Fresh from the CNC machine, Cascade Components had a new link to show this year. Finished just days before Crankworx, this is a prototype version of a new link kit they’re producing for the Orbea Rise eMTB.

This link will add 10mm of travel bringing the Rise up to 150mm, and increase shock progression to somewhere in the high 20% range (the exact amount hasn’t been determined). Cascade is also working on hardware for this link kit that includes two outer washers which will be bolted in place to prevent any potential migration of the links.
