Trek has a new line of simple lightweight alloy kids’ bike called the Wahoo Trail that gives the old Wahoo family a big off-road performance boost. It’s still a rigid aluminum hardtail. But now it gets a lighter carbon fork, much bigger tire clearance, hydraulic disc brakes, a bit more modern MicroShift 1x drivetrain, and internal routing for a dropper post. Like its predecessor, it comes in 24″ wheels, or a smaller 20″ version, too.

Update: Read on for 20″ availability in the US.

Trek’s new lightweight Wahoo Trail 24 kids’ mountain bike

Trek Wahoo Trail lightweight alloy kids bike hybrid mountain bike, 20"
all c. Trek

Officially, the Wahoo family is Trek’s hybrid kids bike, with ‘just big enough’ tires to make it off-road-ready, but sticking with a light and simple rigid frame and fork. Well for 2024, the hybrids lean a bit harder into mountain bikes with the new Wahoo Trail, bumping up to 2.2″ tires – and room for more – plus, what Trek is calling an ‘adult-level’ spec with kid-specific component fits.

So what’s new?

Compared to the old Wahoo, this new Wahoo Trail simply looks beefed up for mountain biking. The 4 big visual shifts are:

  • Proper knobby mountain bike tire. Now the bike gets spec’d with 2.2″ Kenda Amrak knobbies. But there’s apparently room for up to 2.4″ tires if your grom wants to go bigger down the trail.
  • Real disc brakes. The new bike gets short-reach Tektro hydraulic disc brakes sized for small hands & 160mm rotors.
  • More aggressive frame shaping. A dropped toptube and seattube strut mean more standover clearance. But it also helps build in space for internal dropper post routing, if you want to swap in a 31.6 dropper in the future.
  • Lastly, a carbon fork. Bigger tires, disc brakes, and a burly frame inevitably mean more weight. So, Trek gave the Wahoo Trail a carbon fork with its own integrated fender to keep weight in check. Complete bike weight is still a bit more than 1kg heavier than the old rim brake 1.95″-tired version.
Trek Wahoo Trail lightweight alloy kids bike hybrid mountain bike, new geometry

Less obvious, but Trek’s new Alpha Silver Aluminum Wahoo Trail gets a geometry upgrade with a much slacker 67° head angle, longer chainstays & more BB drop. It’s definitely a more MTB-oriented bike now with about 2cm longer Reach and lower Stack and longer wheelbase overall to complement the bigger tires.

Trek Wahoo Trail lightweight alloy kids bike hybrid mountain bike, microshift advent 1x 9-speed

The Wahoo Trail build also upgrades to a MicroShift Advent 1x 9-speed drivetrain with a wider gear spread and a kid-friendly trigger shifter. It gets post mount brakes, a 68mm threaded BB, bolt-on QR axles, a replaceable derailleur hanger, and a kickstand.

The new Wahoo Trail comes in two sizes with either 20″ or 24″ wheels, but otherwise the same spec. Both come in 2 colors – Plasma Grey Pearl or Power Surge green – each with bling oil slick alloy rims.

The Trek Wahoo Trail 24 sells for $700 / 750€ (claimed weight 10.7kg/23.59lb).

While the smaller Trek Wahoo Trail 20 costs a bit less at 730€. No word yet on US pricing & availability for the smaller wheeled bike. Trek has now updated us, saying the 20″ bike will be coming stateside in Spring 2024.

Woom is one of the more recognizable kids’ bike manufacturers. The company has always gone above and beyond to make bikes that kids enjoy and last longer than one season. These aren’t super-suspension, mini-gravel bikes to match their parents — these are bikes that kids like to ride and can ride with ease.

Woom’s second gen OFF and suspension fork equipped OFF Air are examples of why. The OFF started as a light XC kid’s bike but morphed into a jack of all trades with the addition of a full carbon rigid fork. The new version of the Woom OFF and OFF Air boast a weight reduction (21lbs for OFF 5), easier-to-grip handlebars, dropper post compatibility, a kids-specific saddle, and more.

Meet the new Woom OFF and OFF Air.

The Woom OFF and OFF Air kids bike line is designed for kids/parents into off-road riding with the option of exploration. The main difference between the two; Woom OFF comes with a rigid fork (carbon), and the Woom OFF Air comes with a suspension fork. The OFF/OFF Air will fit riders aged 6 to 14, with 20″, 24″, or 26″ wheels and nearly all the trappings of an adult bike.

Woom OFF 5 saddle

Woom OFF and OFF Air— What’s new?

The second generation of the Woom OFF and Woom OFF AIR mountain bikes see many minor tweaks to offer a better riding experience. Starting from the touch points, the grips and saddles are kid-sized with inventive sizing to help aid comfortable riding.

The updated small grips mean a 19mm clamping zone for easier gripping for small hands. For the saddles, each Woom OFF (and others) now arrive with saddle sizes based on the bike size. The smallest Woom OFF 4 comes with a more narrow saddle than the Woom OFF 6, making for more comfortable riding in the long run.

The Woom Kid’s saddles come in three sizes and will be available for after-market purchase if you want to update your kiddo’s ride.

The brakes are also updated, increasing rotor size (F160 and R140mm) and enabling more braking power. The frame stays relatively unchanged, with a new chain guard to keep the paintwork pristine for as long as possible.

Rocket Ron Tire

With this second generation of the Woom OFF and OFF Air, customers now have the option to make changes to the bikes to suit them. The Woom OFF and Woom OFF AIR can be a tubeless tire system in all three sizes — choose the option at check out, or buy some 25mm tubeless tape and do it yourself.

Woom OFF 5 dropper

And the 24′′ and 26′′ versions are dropper post compatible — in case your little one is ready to send it!

Woom Orange

New Color Options

Woom has mostly been a solid color bike company, and its mountain bikes are usually in a matte black paint job. It’s utilitarian, but variety and the new color option Terra Coppa is excellent.

Woom OFF Orange

Why an orang-ish copper color for MTB? We’ll let Woom’s Product manager Lisa Ribarich explain: “The matte copper color makes the link between mountain biking and nature in a big way. The name’ terra coppa’ definitely helps create that connection by bringing in the Latin word for earth (terra). And you can’t help but think of terracotta, a warm and earthy shade, when you hear it.”

Woom Crank

Carefully Chosen Parts — Woom OFF and OFF Air Specs

Another way to make a bike great for kids is to choose a spec that will last and work with kids learning to shift. Wooms’ design team carefully chose every part for the OFF and OFF Air. It’s not as simple as “get the smallest crank arms and big cassette.” It’s about gear ratios and leverage.

Woom chain stay guard

For the drive train of the Woom OFF 5, Woom specs a 28T front ring with short 130mm cranks; This spec enables easy and highly frequent pedaling. Combined with the 34T cassette, there are enough gears for a good uphill/downhill.

The SRAM 9-speed setup is proven to take lots (tons) of abuse and is easy enough to find a replacement part for if it goes the wayside.

Woom Off Air Fork

For the OFF Air, Woom choose the new RST Rel B fork. This fork is an updated RST model F1rst, with a redesigned lower leg and improvements on the dampening side.

Tires are another point where Woom maximizes its footprint. The Woom OFF comes in three advancing sizes (4, 5, and 6), all of which take different wheel sizes but max out at 2.35″ wide — right on the money for XC and some exploration.

Woom BB

Woom OFF and OFF/Air Geometry

The Woom OFF and OFF/Air has a uniquely dropped bottom bracket and an easy-to-maneuver geometry; a 69° head tube and a 70° seat tube. The sporty geometry with a long wheelbase helps with descending and confidence.

The deep-drawn kink in the top tube provides additional safety, allowing the rider to get off quickly.

If you own a recent woom Original kid’s bike, you’re going to want to check out the latest recall. Don’t panic though – the recall only includes models with a very specific stem, and the company is making it super easy to find out if your bike is impacted.

The recall window includes all woom Original models sold from 2018-2021 in sizes 1, 1 PLUS, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. However, only woom models with a single bolt stem and a silver bolt like that above are affected. If the bolts are not tightened to 10Nm with a torque wrench, there is a risk of the handlebar and stem detaching from the bike.

In the same time frame, bikes were sold with stems with a single black bolt, or two silver bolts. Neither of these stems are included in the recall.

To make it even easier to identify, woom has added a stem identification survey on their website. Simply click on the link, and compare the pictures to the stem on your child’s bike. If it is one of the affected models, then woom will send you a stem maintenance kit.

What’s in the Stem Maintenance Kit? It’s simply a torque wrench, a packet of assembly paste (5 g), a 5 mm hex key, and instructions. So even if your stem is one of the affected models, it seems like simply cleaning the steerer, adding assembly paste, and properly torquing the bolt will ensure its safety without replacing any of the parts. Just another example of why you should always properly torque your bolts!

new 2023 Specialized P Series lineup

It seems that no matter what tire size you need, the new Specialized P.Series bikes have you covered. From 20″ for the groms, to 27.5″ for the (taller) grown-ups, the P.Series continues their ‘ruthless progression’ for your dirt jump or pump track sessions.

More than just new wheel sizes, the new P.Series frames include new features as well. At the back end of the bike, you’ll find new Boost 148 x 12mm hub spacing to allow for stronger wheel builds. Those Boost hubs are held in place by a new sliding dropout system that is compatible with both single-speed and geared drivetrains. Each frame will include an optional derailleur hanger so you can throw on a drivetrain of your choice to help you get to your favorite zone a little bit easier.

Specialized P Series seat stay junction

Along those lines, the frames are also now dropper post compatible if you want to be able to actually sit and pedal while still dropping the saddle when it’s time.

Specialized P Series bottom bracket

Elsewhere the frame is built with durability in mind including a threaded bottom bracket, and tapered head tube to run rigid or suspension forks.

Specialized P.Series Models

Specialized P.1 20″

Starting with the 20″ wheeled P.1, this bike features an A1 Premium alloy frame with a rigid A1 alloy fork that is suspension corrected to 80mm of travel. You’ll also find 19mm OD handlebars with smaller grips plus short-reach brake levers for smaller riders. All of the bikes including the P.1 use the new Specialized Kicker dirt jump tire with a low profile, fast-rolling tread. In the U.S., the P.1 will sell for $650.

Specialized P.2 24″

The P.2 moves to 24″ wheels, but is still geared towards younger riders with a Manitou JUnit suspension fork with 100mm of travel and a DJ specific tune. Sold in single-speed configuration for $1,250, the P.2 comes in the two colors shown above.

Specialized P.3 26″

Fans of the original 26″ wheeled P.Series bikes will want to check out the P.3. Also built with an aluminum frame, the P.3 is designed around a 100mm travel Marzocchi Bomber DJ 26″ fork and matching 26″ wheels with Specialized Kicker DJ tires. Note that the P.2, P.3, and P.4 all include single-speed-specific hubs, so if you want to run gears you’ll have to swap out the hub or rear wheel. The complete P.3 will sell for $2,000, but it will also be available as a frame-only for $700.

Specialized P.4 27.5″

Finally, for those wanting the ride of the P.3 but with bigger wheels, the new P.4 upsizes to 27.5″ wheels and tires. It also gets a Marzocchi Bomber Z1 fork with 100mm of travel, an aluminum frame, and single-speed drivetrain. The price is slightly higher at $2,100, but the frame is also available for $700.

Geometry

Specialized P.series geometry 2023

There are four different bikes with four different geometries for the P.Series. Specialized states that while both the P.3 and P.4 frames will fit both 26 and 27.5″ wheels and tires, there are differences in geometry, and changing the wheel size will have an effect on the bottom bracket height.

Thule’s slogan is ‘Bring Your Life.’ Dogs are certainly a big part of a lot of people’s lives, and now you can bring them too – thanks to the new Thule Bexey dog trailer.

Thule Bexey dog trailer

Introduced on the first day of Eurobike 2023, the Bexey joins a substantial revamp of the Chariot child trailer, a new Paramount backpack pannier bag, and the new Epos rack which we saw a bit earlier in the year. All of these products still have substantial time until they hit the market, but we got some first looks at early samples from the show.

Part of a complete new category for dogs, the Bexey will be joined by dog crates (September 23) and harnesses to make it easier than ever to bring your pup out on your next adventure.

New Thule Bexey Dog trailer

To create the Bexey trailer, Thule enlisted the help of dog experts to create a product that was not only easy for humans to use, but something canines would quickly become used to as well. That includes a 3D molded floor that can be made completely flat for training your dog to get comfortable with the idea of riding in a trailer. The Bexey will be available to consumers somewhere around this time next year.

New Thule Chariot

New Thule chariot 2024

Over on the human child side of things, the Thule Chariot trailer has gotten a massive redesign with some very interesting features. The new design is said to be around 95% new, and is intended to make it easier to use, more comfortable for the child, and more visible (safe) for everyone involved.

Starting with the attachment of the trailer to the bike, the new quick release mount makes it easier than ever. The mounting plate stays on the bike, and the tower basically just snaps into place when you line the two up. To remove it, just press the grey button and slide upwards. There’s still a lock core so you can secure the trailer to the bike, and a new shock cord safety tether.

At the other end, the tow bar easily clicks into the trailer frame and there’s another lock core to again prevent theft of the trailer when parked. One of the big improvements to the design is how the stroller wheels are stowed – you no longer have to remove them to flip them over. Now simply open the quick release lever, spin them 180º, and fasten the QR. The design will make it a snap to go from stroller to trailer mode, and you are never without the stroller wheels.

Another huge improvement is the option to run just one or two seats in the same trailer. Previously, if you were only using the trailer for one child, the empty seat couldn’t be removed, so you ended up with a child sitting to one side making a bit cramped and unbalanced ride. Now, you can simply remove the second seat, and position the remaining seat in the center giving better weight distribution, and more elbow room for the child.

Finally, in the age of the distracted driver, every bit of increased visibility matters. The new design features an elegant integrated LED light that stretches across the entire back of the trailer.

Like the Bexey, you’ll have to wait for the new Chariot to arrive with Canada seeing them around March 2024, and the US getting them later in 2025.

Thule Paramount Pannier Backpack

On the bag side, the popular Thule Paramount backpack is getting a pannier upgrade. We’ve seen a few different pannier/backpack combinations, but the trick is always how to make it comfortable as a backpack, and yet still functional as a pannier. The Thule Paramount does that with a brilliantly designed removable backplate with backpack straps on one side, and a locking pannier mechanism on the other.

To swap back and forth, there is a single zipper that unzips the top half of the back plate, while the bottom slots into a socket on the bag. When it’s flipped to pannier mode, there is an additional buckle strap to anchor the bottom of the bag against the rack. The Paramount uses the same pannier hardware as the Thule Shield which includes a clamp that actually grips the bar on the rack to prevent any rattling, and is compatible with 8-16mm diameter bars.

The Paramount Pannier also includes a full size rain cover that is reflective to keep the contents dry, and yourself visible. Expect to see these in stores around August this year.

It’s already been a big year for Thule, and there’s more in the pipeline. Stay tuned.

An e-bike built specifically for kids — with the power of adult models. The new Specialized Turbo Levo SL Kids gives a whole new avenue for fun on the trails (or the ability to keep up with adults). It’s 36.6 lbs of a legit e-bike equipped with the same internals as the adult Levo SL.

Specialized Turbo Levo SL Kids riding

Specialized Turbo Levo SL Kids

The idea Turbo Levo SL kids model is to give an extra boost to kids on trails. To help those little legs get over the big climbs and maybe conquer ascents they never thought possible. The extra boost could help young riders learn to navigate the trails and drive a mountain bike like a well-seasoned rider.

Specialized Turbo Levo SL Kids trails

Geometry and Fit

The standover height is very low, perfect for getting on/off and bailing when the trail becomes too challenging. Geometry-wise, the Kids Levo SL sports a slack 66° head tube angle matched with a long stack and reach. The more extended reach is a reasonably progressive fit for a kid’s bike; it keeps the young rider engaged but able to steer and drive the bike effectively.

What age is the Kid’s Turbo Levo SL for?

Sizing is easy; there is only one. The Turbo Levo SL Kid’s can fit riders from 48-60 inches or six years and older (roughly). The standover gives enough room for the shortest inseams to have ground clearance. For the older riders (10-11 years), the bike will fit but with more of a playful ride.

Specialized Turbo Levo SL Kids buttons

So what’s the power?

This Turbo Levo SL 24″ has the same internals as the adult flagship version. That means the same operating system, tuneability, and dialing-in of power on Specialized Mission Control. The new Specialized 1.2 SL Custom Rx Trail-Tuned Motor is the same as the newly launched Levo SL.

Specialized Turbo Levo SL Kids motor

The battery is the same 320wh as the Levo SL. This battery will supply around 5 hours of ride time for adults — For a kid; it’s much longer.

Specialized Turbo Levo SL Kids

Top-End Specs

Kids are usually more brutal on their gear than adults, and lower specs never help the cause. Specialized went all in for Turbo Levo SL Kids with quality gear to last the drops and slams.

Specialized Turbo Levo SL Kids clouds

The fork is a Rock Shox Reba with 100mm travel and a 40mm offset. The spec team chose the dependable yet fairly light SRAM NX 11-spd groupset for shifting paired with an 11-42T cassette. For brakes, SRAM Level T brakes take up the charge and should work well and stop on a dime paired with 160mm front and rear rotors.

Specialized Turbo Levo SL Kids rear

You don’t usually see a kid’s bike with a dropper from the start, but this isn’t your run-of-the-mill kid’s bike. The Kid’s Levo SL comes with a TranzX dropper with 80mm travel — enough to get rowdy but slam the seat for little riders.

The wheels are Specialized in-house builds, with tubeless rims and sealed cartridge bearings. The Turbo Levo SL 24″ comes with Specialized tubeless Ground Control 24 x 2.35″ tires with control casing. The 2.35″ width on a 24″ wheel makes it look like a plus-sized setup and should inspire confident riding for whoever is on board.

As for color options, riders can choose from Glossy black and Orange, Satin Black and Glossy Oak Green — all match well with the dirty trails.

Prevelo Bikes Updated designs at sea otter classic kids only

Prevelo has become one of my favorite booths at the Sea Otter Classic. They always have new components designed for kids, and their stoke for getting youth on bikes is contagious.

For 2023 the kid-centric brand rolled new models and some larger (26″ wheeled) bikes. They also showcased updated components and carbon accessories, available soon to bling out your kiddos’ ride.

Prevelo Bikes — Updated Designs

Prevelo Bikes Updated designs at sea otter classic new colors

Several updated frame designs were at the Prevelo booth for Sea Otter Classic. The one that stuck out the most to me was the updated Alpha. The Alpha is the all-arounder bike from Prevelo. It’s capable of dirt, road, gravel, and so on.

Prevelo Alpha Two

Prevelo Bikes Updated designs at sea otter classic Alpha two

The Alpha Two received a very cool seatpost update, making it much easier for small riders.

The design is similar to a BMX seat and post combo but maximizes the amount of the post that can enter the frame. Prevelo had to redesign their seatpost clamps to get the proper clearance.

The result is a slammed seatpost that allows a child to grow into the bike and get the most use of the frame.

Prevelo Alpha Three – Four – Five

Prevelo Bikes Updated designs at sea otter classic Alpha series

As for the Alpha Three, Four, and Five, the frame is notably different, with an extra bit of tire clearance and compliance in the rear.

Prevelo Bikes Updated designs at sea otter classic alpha

Pervelo designs the frames so it’s easier for kids to get on/off the bikes and feel confident while pedaling. This new frame design and some very new electric colorways look to accomplish that.

Larger Tires — Prevelo Zulu Five

Prevelo Bikes Updated designs at sea otter classic 26

Previously the Prevelo sizing maxed out at a 24″ wheeled bike. Now they are moving into 26″ land, and the bikes are getting more serious. The new Prevelo Zulu Five is the newest addition to the brand lineup. It is the first 26″ mountain bike they have offered.

Prevelo Bikes Updated designs at sea otter classic zulu
Pervelo Zulu 24″ gets a new electric blue paint job for 2023 and beyond.

The bike is very close in appearance to its brethren in Zulu, but the addition of 26″ wheels opens up more possibilities for tires, forks, and rims.

Prevelo Bikes Updated designs at sea otter classic tires

The Zulu Five (and others) roll on WTB tubeless STi rims, Kenda Regolith Pro 2.40″ tires, and more to offer.

Hier Components — Carbon Upgrades

Prevelo Bikes Updated designs at sea otter classic carbon kids crank
The new Heir carbon crankset features a direct mount chain ring and narrow stance width.

Prevelo has an in-house component line, Heir. They offer aftermarket kid-fit cranksets, handlebars pedals, and other accessories. Previously the components were only offered alloy and different anodized color offerings.

For 2023 Prevelo is stepping it up and offering a carbon crankset (145mm) that works in many frames.

They are also venturing into the handlebar category, releasing a carbon bar with 19mm grips, feature designers found needing to be improved in the cockpit world.

Prevelo Bikes Updated designs at sea otter classic 19mm grips

In addition to the carbon bars, Hier will offer aftermarket 19mm lock-on grips, perfect for young riders.

Updated Spec

Prevelo Bikes Updated designs at sea otter classic new TekTro

As for updated specs, Prevelo is moving away from the Radius line of brake sets and starting to spec TekTro brake systems on their bikes. The Prevelo team liked the robust design of the TekTro and the limited need to service.

Did you know there was such a thing as the Balance Bike World Championships? I didn’t either, but it’s a thing, and it looks as adorable as it sounds. Kind of like mutton-busting.

The Pinkbike-affiliated, three-day event takes place in Herefordshire, England, starting August 24. Children ages 2 to 5 will have three races in which to test their balance bike skills: A Quad Eliminator, a Slalom, and a Downhill event. According to the event website, the riders that accumulate the most points in their category over the three races will be crowned the winner on Sunday.

The Pinkbike Balance Bike World Championships are a part of the festivities at the GT Malverns Classic — a mountain bike festival with a plethora of races for all ages. Assuming you and your kiddo can make your way to merry old England, the balance bike tournament only costs £15 to enter.

Pop over to the GT Malverns Classic website for more entry details.

And as long as we’re talking balance bikes, now seems like a good time to point out that World Strider Day is right around the corner. Strider is a South Dakota-based, balance-bike brand with a range of toddler and kid-friendly rides. To participate in World Strider Day, get your kids out on their Strider bikes anytime between now and May 10. Make sure and nab a photo or video — the more unique, the better!

Then head to Strider’s website and submit your entry for a chance to win.

“16 winners will…be chosen, announced, and notified on May 15,” according to a Strider press release. The prize? A $100 Strider voucher for use on one of their products. After all, kids are always growing, and chances are you’ll need a bigger size sooner rather than later.

Happy riding, babies!

YT is extending its line of full suspension mountain bikes for growing riders, adding the YT Jeffsy Primus 27. It joins the Jeffsy Primus 24 and Jeffsy Primus 26, offering another rung on the size ladder for developing Young Talent. The Jeffsy Primus 27 is aimed at folk between 135 cm and 165 cm tall (or 4’5” – 5’5”), making it a legitimate option for shorter adults, too. Indeed, it runs the very same frame as the 2021 YT Jeffsy 275, completed with cockpit and contact point components better suited to the shorter rider.

Speaking of Young Talent… Lennox Zimmermann shows us what’s possible.

YT Jeffsy Primus 27

The YT Jeffsy Primus 27 is essentially a re-positioning of the 27.5″ wheel model of the 2021 YT Jeffsy. It runs the very same aluminum frameset. As such, it boasts 150mm of rear wheel travel paired with a 150mm fork, and an identical geometry. That’s a reach of 422mm, with a seat tube length of 395mm, and a chainstay length of 432mm.

yt jeffsy primus 27
The YT Jeffsy Primus 27 weighs a claimed 15.3 kg with tubeless tires, without pedals and bottle

The Jeffsy Primus 27 sees a geometry-adjusting flip-chip at the lower shock mount, allowing the rider to raise or lower the bottom bracket height, concomitantly altering the head tube angle. In its low position, the Primus 27 has a BB drop of 13mm, and a HA of 65.7°. Full details on geometry can be found below.

What is more noteworthy here, is that the Jeffsy Primus 27 brings the price of this all-mountain bike down to a more budget-friendly £2,499 – but only for shorter riders, of course. That’s £500 cheaper than the comparable Jeffsy Core 2 model, the price of which has risen to £2,999.

Highlights of the Jeffsy Primus 27 build include a 150mm RockShox Lyrik Base Fork, a custom-tuned RockShox Deluxe Select Shock, a SRAM SX Eagle 12-Speed Drivetrain with 11-50T cassette and 165mm cranks, and SRAM G2 R Brakes with 200mm rotors front and rear.

Young Talent, Lennox Zimmermann, does a whip over a table on his Jeffsy Primus 27

It rolls on a Sunringle Duroc Wheelset with 35mm internal diameter rims, seating a Maxxis Minion DHF/DHRII pairing in the EXO Casing. Additional derrière-to-saddle clearance is afforded by a 125mm drop YT Postman Dropper Seat Post topped with an SDG BEL Air 3.0. In the cockpit we see an E13 Base Bar and Stem; the bar is 760mm wide with a 20mm rise, while the stem has a 40mm length.

two children wearing helmets with brims on them

Here’s a universal truth, if ever there was one: kids don’t want to wear helmets.

But if there’s anyone who needs to be wearing a helmet, it’s a 10-year-old in possession of a hastily built backyard ramp and an undeveloped prefrontal cortex. The newly launched helmet company ProLids hopes to help with this conundrum.

ProLids’ theory is that if helmets don’t look quite so dorky, kids might be more prone to wear them. To that effect, the brand designed a helmet with a removable, reversible brim to mimic a hat-like appearance. The helmet ships with three interchangeable brim styles. With options to attach the brims to the front and back, that means there are six ways to wear the helmet.

The ProLid ships with a “lid” and three interchangeable brims that can be worn backwards or forwards.

“I have dealt with the fallout from a childhood head injury for most of my life,” ProLids founder Brett Baker wrote in a press release. “My main goal in starting ProLids is to help prevent today’s kids from having to go through the same experience. To do that, we had to design a helmet that was safe, and that looked cool enough for kids to want to wear it.”

The Oklahoma-based brand also plans to donate ProLids helmets to organizations that promote bicycle safety to children, starting with Bike Club Tulsa.

The CPSC-certified helmets fit individuals eight and up, “as well as small to medium adults.” The “lid” and three brims are available directly from ProLids or through participating retailers for MSRP $60. Replacement brims are also available.

Kids Ride Shotgun, better known for their top tube-mounted shotgun child seats, have finally launched the Dirt Hero Balance Bike. In the brand’s eyes, the Dirt Hero represents the next phase in a kid’s riding journey, giving them the freedom to ride singletrack themselves for the very first time. We’ve seen the Dirt Hero up-close a few times now; our verdict? It is a feature-packed and incredibly well thought-through Balance Bike.

We are told, “Every aspect has been considered to ensure kids have the best possible experience when advancing from the driveway to the dirt”.

Kids Ride Shotgun Dirt Hero Balance Bike

kids ride shotgun dirt hero balance bike
The Kids Ride Shotgun Dirt Hero Balance Bike weighs a claimed 4 kg with a 12″ wheelset and without the Magura brake

The Kids Ride Shotgun Dirt Hero Balance Bike is designed for children aged 2-5 years, and has adjustable dropouts allowing for the fitment of 12″ or 14″ wheels. So, as your child grows, so can this Balance Bike. The brand is calling it a “scaled down enduro machine”. As such, it is appropriately fitted with high-volume knobbly tires from Vee Tire Co and a Magura MT4 rear disc brake with rotor guard. The brake runs the HC1 lever, the reach of which can be adjusted for small hands.

kids ride shotgun dirt hero balance bike magura disc brake rear rotor guard

Yes, the Dirt Hero is a Balance Bike, but a removable foot pad does offer opportunity for some feet-up riding.

“We’ve noticed a growing number of balance bike families hitting the trails, but we know it can be hard for parents to find a runner bike that’s up to the task. That’s why we set out to create a bike that would open up riding off-road for balance bike kids, enabling them to experience the stoke of mountain biking from an earlier age.” – Dan, Co-Founder.

You read that right; this balance bike can even be set up as a mullet

Pricing & Availability

The Kids Ride Shotgun Dirt Hero Balance Bike retails at $340 USD; that’s with the 12″ wheelset and without the Magura brake. The 14″ wheelset and disc brake are optional extras.

It’s available now, and comes with three customizable top tube skins.

GT brings back 26″ wheels for its first full suspension mountain bike for the Youth category; the GT Stomper FS. It comes in one size only, aimed at riders around 4’4” to 5’0” (132cm to 152cm), and may well also appeal to shorter adults who struggle to find a good fit with the XS offerings out there. This aluminum frame boasts 120mm of rear wheel travel, delivered via a scaled-down version of GT’s LTS suspension platform, paired with a 130mm fork. There is just one model, retailing at $1,500 USD ($2,000 CAD).

GT Stomper FS

The GT Stomper FS is appropriately spec’d with 26″ x 2.3″ WTB Vigilante Tires, an 80mm Dropper and Tektro Hydraulic Disc Brakes

What’s up with the new GT logo? Well, it’s not a brand-wide logo. Here, it signifies that the Stomper FS is part of the brand’s so-called capsule collection, celebrating 50 years of GT Bicycles. Looks neat, doesn’t it?

I digress. The new GT Stomper FS is available in Gloss June Bloom with Purple, or Gloss Gunmetal with Mustard Yellow. Just one model is announced today; it has the following key specs:

  • SR Suntour 130mm XCR34 Air Fork
  • SR Suntour Raidon R Shock
  • 80mm TranzX Dropper Seat Post
  • MicroSHIFT AdventX 10 Speed Drivetrain

The Stomper FS sees a thoroughly modern trail bike geometry; it pairs a 65° head angle with a low standover of 675mm. Reach is 335mm. Geometry is not adjustable.

gt stomper fs geometry kids mtb full suspension

Also noteworthy is the use of a SRAM UDH. Cables are routed internally through the front triangle, entering at the headtube and exiting at the underside of the downtube. From there, the gear cable and rear brake hose are guided externally along the chainstays. The drive-side chainstay lacks protection from chain slap. The front triangle gets two sets of bosses; one set on the downtube for a water bottle, and another on the underside of the top tube; here, you can secure a multi-tool, inner tube, and other trail side repair essentials.

For the last decade, woom has continued going strong in the kids’ bike department. And there’s good reason for it: The kid-specific builder has appeared in best kids’ bike lineups everywhere from BikeRumor to Forbes.

Now, company co-founders Christian Bezdeka and Marcus Ihlenfeld are celebrating 10 years of designing bikes for tykes. To do it, woom is relaunching its ORIGINAL line of bikes in bright, bold Anniversary Red.

The color, which looks a little more like a bow on a gift box than the company’s usual race red, drops today on every size of woom ORIGINAL. To set off the special look, there’s also a cool dinosaur badge on the front.

woom steerer tube badge

About 1.1 million kids across the globe are riding wooms, the company estimated in a press release. In case you’re just catching up, that’s because purpose-driven design drives the company’s builds, prioritizing kids’ needs instead of just adapting conventions from adult bikes. Child-specific geometry, a wide size range, and quality componentry characterize the lineup.

“[W]e want to build the best children’s bikes in the world,” Ihlenfeld said in the press release. “But we want more than that. We want to create memorable moments for children and parents to enjoy when they’re out cycling together. They could be a child’s first independent ride or their first mountain bike trail. Or they could happen on the daily school or nursery run or on a multi-day cycling adventure.”

For 2023, Propain has added a new 16″ single-speed member to its line of Children’s Mountain Bikes; the Propain Barney slots into the lineup between the Bam Bam balance bike and the newly-updated 20″ Dreckspatz Hardtail, 20″ Frechdax Full Suspension, and the 24″ Yuma Full Suspension Bike.

Propain Barney Kids’ Mountain Bike

The Propain Barney is aimed at 3-6 year olds, or kids that are anywhere between 95 cm and 115 cm tall. Retailing at € 499, the Barney is a fairly high-end children’s bike, kitted out with mechanical disc brakes and contact point components from Sixpack, featuring ergonomics designed specifically for small humans. At this age, it doesn’t need to be complicated, so the Barney has a single-speed drivetrain. No actual weight is provided, but Propain say the aluminum frame is lightweight. Cable routing is internal.

For children age 5-11 years (or 1.1-1.45 meters tall), there is the Dreckspatz Hardtail or the Frechdax Full Suspension Bike, both of which feature 20″ wheels. These two are updated for 2023 with the following key features:

  • New aluminum frame with internal cable routing
  • Customizable with 2 frame colors and 4 component colors
  • Sixpack 1st Ride components designed for kids ergonomics
  • Sensitive fork with carbon reinforced crown
  • SRAM X5 9-speed
  • Hydraulic disc brakes
  • SRAM UDH derailleur hanger

“Our Kids Bikes are an important and integral part of PROPAIN. The Frechdax was originally developed in 2012 as a special project for my own son, but pretty quickly it became clear that not only our own kids have a need for a real mountain bike in the right size. We are very happy to now pass on the knowledge from 10 years of kids mountain bike development to the next generation.” – David Assfalg, Propain CEO.

The Propain Frechdax and Dreckspatz (left and middle) are available in Raw and Petrol Dark and can also be customized with Sixpack 1st Ride components in the 4 colors – Black, Lime Green, Raspberry Pink and Sky Blue.

Kids Ride Shotgun has released the Shotgun Seat 2.0 with an increased weight capacity of 27 kg, up from the 22 kg capacity of the original. It also sees some key revisions that make it easier to use for both the child and their engine/guardian, with increased adjustability so that as the child grows, so can the seat. Retail price is £130.

Kids Ride Shotgun Seat 2.0

The Shotgun 2.0 seat, shown to us at CORE Bike, now features a quick-release axle that runs through the stunt pegs pedals, making it quicker and easier to install compared to the original which has the more rudimentary-looking nuts and bolts. With that change, the 2.0 Seat looks a lot more refined and engineered. The mounting portions are fully rubberized to ensure your carbon or alloy frame remains free of scratches.

The seat attaches to the top tube and downtube via a friction fit

The saddle is also upgraded to the Pro version, giving the child a lower ride height for added stability. The angle of the saddle is adjustable with use of an allen key. And, there is a new 40mm leg length adjustment feature, allowing the Seat 2.0 to fit taller kids.

Trevor Worsey of Kids Ride Shotgun tested this one on a 4-Day 165 km bikepacking trip through New Zealand, taking in the Timber Trail and the Moerangi Track. Well, strictly speaking, his son tested it. Pretty adventurous, right? Clearly, this isn’t just a wee gadget for a quick lap of the Trail Center on a Sunday afternoon.

For folk still not stoked on putting their toddler’s weight through the bike’s top tube, the ultimate solution would be the Kids Ride Shotgun Pro Seat that installs via clamps on the seat post and the headset, with no frame contact necessary whatsoever. That one is a little more expensive, though, retailing at £225.

The Pro Seat comes with two sets of mounting hardware, so you can switch the seat between bikes mid-ride if you need to palm the child off on your riding partner for a break! At CORE Bike, Trevor demonstrated how quick and easy the process is; I swear it took him no longer than 10 seconds to remove it from this Raaw.

kids ride shotgun bar 2.0

There’s also a 2.0 Shotgun Bar, updated with the Shotgun Pro grip that is just 19mm thick – better for smaller hands to wrap around. The clamp region is available with insert spacers to fit either 35mm or 31.8mm bars. This one retails at £35. However, if you buy the Shotgun Seat 2.0 and Handlebar 2.0 as a bundle, you get a small discount with the lot coming to £155.

Tasmania’s Henty, whom you may know from some of our past coverage of their products like the Wingman and Enduro Hydration pack, is releasing a new hydro pack for the lil’ mountain bikers in your family unit – the Enduro Junior.

The Enduro Junior is said to provide both hip and lumbar protection for kids with 1.5 liters of hydration, and tons of packability. The pack has an adjustable shoulder harness that comes in two lengths for the small ones.

Just like the larger Henty Enduro, the Junior has the same “innovative combination of lumbar pack/shoulder harness, providing mountain bikers with hydration and stability while carrying everything they could possibly need while riding trails”.

Henty Enduro Junior green

Henty wanted to focus on the whole family of mountain bikers with the introduction of the Enduro Junior, focusing on the younger MTB’ers. That being said with the two sizes of straps, the Enduro Junoir can be swapped between the smaller for kids/women to the larger for men.

Here’s what Henty founder Jeremy Grey had to say about that “the EnduroJunior has been designed to be the hydration pack that all mountain bikers can wear to stay energized and hydrated on a variety of rides. For kids, the EnduroJunior also protects their hips — a common injury zone — which no other product can comfortably protect while at the same time providing hydration,” He adds, “in addition, the smaller kids/women’s shoulder harness solves another common problem by ensuring a tight, secure and stable fit. And within seconds, an available larger shoulder harness can be easily swapped in so that men can enjoy the Enduro Junior too.

Henty says that the 1.5-liter water reservoir on the Enduro Junior is positioned close to the rider’s natural center of gravity, saying that provides freedom and agility on the bike. This design also eliminates the “sweaty back syndrome” associated with conventional hydration packs.

Although the Enduro Junior has adjustable shoulder straps, giving it the stability of a backpack, the straps can be removed to wear it as a traditional lumbar pack for lighter loads.

The woom 3 AUTOMAGIC 16-inch bike’s auto-shifting feature makes starts easier and allows your budding racer to build up some speed on the flats.

This article was originally published on GearJunkie

More kids on bikes — that’s what we say. Bikemaker woom, known for innovating in the children’s bike space, is on it.

The company built its woom 3 AUTOMAGIC around a nifty Sturmey Archer A2 two-speed hub that automatically shifts from low to high at around 7 mph. All the maintenance-free goodness of two-speed internally geared hub gearing plus a riding experience optimized for fun? Sign our kids up.

woom 3 automagic

Woom designed the bike for ages 4 through 6. As such, the aluminum frame sports low-entry-point geometry with 16″ wheels for easy straddling, and the total weight comes in at around 14.3 pounds (6.5kg).

The sweet braking system includes color-coded levers to help your kiddo remember what lever engages which brake. Bonus: The levers are adjustable. So at least your kid’s bike will still fit after a growth spurt even if their clothes don’t.

Of course, the woom 3 AUTOMAGIC’s chief selling point is the automatic hub, but woom’s other kid-specific features are worth a look. The high-rise handlebars and rounded stem are safety-friendly, as is the removable chainguard.

But our favorite touch is the clever steering limiter, which helps youngins stay pointed in the right direction on the trail. And if your kid doesn’t need that level of oversight, removing the limiter with a hex tool is easy enough.

woom 3 automagic

At $449, the woom 3 AUTOMAGIC is a bit pricey. But you get a lot of functionality and thoughtful design for your money. And it can be traded in for the next larger-size bike through woom’s upCYCLING program.

Oh yeah, and it comes in red, green, blue, purple, and yellow.

Features:

  • Ergonomic geometry designed specifically for children
  • Ultralight aluminum frame – just 14.3 pounds
  • Wide, ergonomic, lightweight handlebars in BMX style
  • Child-friendly hand-operated brakes, with a distinctive green color on the rear brake for easy recognition
  • woom Ergogrips with a small, child-friendly diameter
  • Practical quick-release seatpost clamp that’s easy to operate with minimal strength
  • Saddle ergonomically designed to fit a child’s pelvis, and with protected sides for leaning against walls
  • Smart steering limiter
  • Ultralight SOOPA-DOOPA-HOOPS aluminum rims
  • 16 x 1.4-inch Schwalbe Little Joe tires, with reflective side stripes for optimal visibility

Check it out.

2023 marin rift zone alloy trail bike being ridden on MTB trails

The 2023 Marin Rift Zone alloy mountain bikes are all-new from the ground up, but they call it an evolution, not a revolution. The goal was to simply take one of their most popular models and make it more capable without changing its playful character.

Travel is bumped up 5mm to 130mm in the rear, with longer 140mm forks on all full-size bikes, and 130mm forks on junior bikes. The geometry was modernized with a 1º steeper seat tube and 0.5º slacker head angle, and 430mm chainstays across the board.

This aligns the model across 29er, 27.5, and Junior (24/26) models…giving them each the same kinematics, look, and feel for all wheel sizes. It makes for great “adult” bikes, and even better kids’ bikes.

suspension details on 2023 marin rift zone alloy trail bike

The new “Rifty” has a slightly higher initial leverage ratio and larger volume canister for good small bump compliance. A very linear overall curve keeps it predictable throughout the travel. Anti-squat is about 112% at 30% sag, with virtually flat anti-rise to avoid brake jack.

It all adds up to suspension good enough fro Martha Gill to take the win at the 2022 Crankworx Rotorua Dual Slalom on this bike.

Chainstay and seatstay protectors also help keep it quiet, and even the forged rear dropouts have cleanly integrated exit ports. Other features and updates include a SRAM UDH hanger and ISCG tabs around a threaded bottom bracket shell.

The bikes fit up to 2.5″ tires, shown here with the Maxxis Assegai 29×2.5″ that come stock on the top model.

What about the carbon models?

For now, the carbon Rift Zone bikes, which were added to the line in 2019, carry over unchanged, still with 125mm rear travel and 130mm forks. But you can probably see where this is headed.

29er & 27.5″ models & pricing

2023 marin rift zone XR

Rift Zone XR – stands for Extra Rad, gets even better suspension, drivetrain, Maxxis Assegai 2.5″ MAXX TERRA tires with EXO casing, Shimano dropper lever that mounts directly to the brake lever clamp for a cleaner cockpit.  A Shimano XT/SLX drivetrain with M420 4-piston brakes, Fox FLOAT X rear shock, and Marzocchi Bomber Z1 fork complete the package. MSRP is $3499 (€3,499).

All three adult models come in S/M/L/XL frame sizes with your choice of 29er or 27.5″ wheels and tires.

2023 marin rift zone 2

Rift Zone 2 – Gets Vee Flow Snap 2.35″ tires with stickier compound, FSA Comet cranks, a Marzocchi Bomber Z2 fork and Rockshox Deluxe Select RT Debonair rear shock, with a Shimano Deore 12-speed drivetrain. One colorway for $2399 (€2,599).

2023 marin rift zone 1

2023 marin rift zone 1

Rift Zone 1 – The base model gets X-Fusion forks, which let them spec a fork with an alloy stanchion and closed cartridge damper at the lowest price point. Has a rigid seatpost and a QR rear axle. MSRP is $1,799 (€1,999), available in two colors and an XS size.

new MTB grips on 2023 marin rift zone alloy trail bike

All come with Marin’s new lock-on grips, which have a thumb indent and grippy, siped texture that worked well.

fork detail on 2023 marin rift zone alloy trail bike

And they all get Marin’s own wheels, pre-taped for tubeless, with tubeless-ready tires. Just add valve stems and sealant and you can go tubeless.

Shimano 200-series hubs on 1/2, Deore non-series hubs on XR. Pinned rims on lower two, sleeved alloy rims on XR, all are 29mm internal width. Overall a very upgrade-worthy frame.

Upgraded Junior models for the kids

2023 marin rift zone 26-inch
Marin Rift Zone 26″

Geometry is a bit different for the smaller bikes, with a 65.5º head angle, 76º seat angle, and 425mm chainstays.

The Junior and base level “1” come with a proprietary bolt-in 9mm rear axle to keep costs low, but both are upgradeable to a standard Boost 148×12 boost thru axle on both, too. Yes, Boost on a kids bike, which makes it easier to find parts since non-boost MTB hubs are getting harder to find.

2023 marin rift zone JR 24-inch
Marin Rift Zone JR 24″

26” and Junior (24″) bikes’ X-Fusion Velvet forks get a damper that’s tuned for lighter riders so it’s more compliant and actually works for smaller riders. The JR gets 155mm cranks, 26” gets 170mm cranks. MSRP is $1799 for both.

Lazer helmets sit on the heads of many of the most accomplished cyclists in the world.

Riders who trust the brand to deliver comfort, safety, and speed when it matters most include current Tour de France champion Jonas Vingagaard, Wout van Aert, and many others. These elite cyclists love the technology and features found in Lazer helmets like KinetiCore rotational impact protection and optional aerodynamic attachments to get the most out of their equipment on race day.

But Lazer helmets aren’t just for the pros. Models with KinetiCore, optional integrated lights, and other features are available in all shapes, sizes, and price points.

Here’s a rundown of Lazer helmets to help find the perfect fit for every rider in the family.

Road and Commuting Helmets

Vento KinetiCore

Lazer’s Vento KinetiCore is a performance-driven helmet that updates the Bullet 2.0 with improvements in pretty much every category of design, from aerodynamics to ventilation.

Lazer says the Vento KinetiCore is 5.4% lighter than the Bullet 2.0, 29% lighter, 2.3% more aerodynamic, and features 5.4% percent better cooling and ventilation.

Lazer’s KinetiCore rotational impact protection technology is fully integrated throughout the design process to bring optimal protection and lightness to the helmet. The Vento’s design features an aggressive 15-degree sprint-position angle ideal for aerodynamic performance.

The Vento adjusts with ScrollSys belt and includes a silicone docking system for eyewear. Optional LED lights also are available to bring another level of safety to the helmet.

The Vento KinetiCore comes in four colors, including White, Red, Black Flash Yellow, and Matte Black for an MSRP of $299.99.

Strada KinetiCore

Lazer’s Strada KinetiCore brings a breath of versatility to the brand’s road lineup. The Strada, which features the same KinetiCore technology as the Vento, features highly breathable ventilation and is compatible with an Aeroshell accessory, which offers increased aerodynamic performance and weather protection.

The Strada features Lazer’s Venturi ventilation system, which sucks cool air through the front while shooting hot air from the back. Lazer says the Strada runs 6% lighter than the Lazer Blade+ and uses 20 fewer grams of plastic in its design. That cuts down on both the helmet’s weight and carbon footprint.

The G1 MIPS includes 22 vents with internal air channels that add 8% more airflow over the head. The helmet uses a lightweight Advanced Rollsys with a vertical adjustable head basket. It also includes two pad options including superlight and comfort pads to dial in fit and function.

Like the Strada, the G1 MIPS also is Aeroshell compatible for those who want an even greater aerodynamic edge.

Sphere MIPS

The Lazer Sphere MIPS offers all-day comfort in a high-performance package. The Sphere MIPS features a progressive Advanced Rollsys fit system that cinches down with a thumbwheel on the top of the back of the helmet. The MIPS system in the helmet helps reduce the chance of injury from rotational impacts during a crash. A polycarbonate layer inside the helmet also helps keep foam together if a rider goes down, which is helpful if the helmet takes multiple hits.

KinetiCore uses controlled crumple zones to direct energy away from riders’ heads in the event of a crash.

The helmet features a TurnSys adjustment system that cinches down using a dial and includes four ventilation points to keep riders cool. It also works with Lazer’s Universal LED on the back for increased visibility.

Lazer says the CityZen KinetiCore is 19% lighter than the Lazer One+ MIPS and uses 100 fewer grams of plastic in its construction. It includes Lazer’s top-end safety features in a package that cuts out unnecessary weight.

Jackal KinetiCore

Lazer’s Jackal KinetiCore takes the same KinetiCore rotational impact protection system from the brand’s road and commuter helmets to the trail.

The Jackal weighs in at 340 grams in size medium and comes loaded with accessories designed to enhance off-road riding.

The helmet features a magnetic buckle that is easy to use with full-finger gloves, along with an integrated camera mount for those who like to capture their rides. The Jackal KinetiCore mount system prevents the camera or accessories from intruding into the helmet in the event of an impact, making it a safer option.

Lazer’s TurnSys technology makes dialing in fit quick and easy, and recesses in the side of the helmet help reduce the pressure that results from the arms of sunglasses pressing against the head.

Kids Helmets

Pnut KinetiCore

Lazer’s Pnut KinetiCore gives kids a great helmet whether just starting out in a carrier or hitting the pedals on their own.

The Pnut features Lazer’s KinetiCore rotational impact protection system and deeper temple coverage in anticipation of tip-overs that can’t be avoided with younger riders.

For those not quite ready to get on a bike under their own power, the Pnut has a flatter rear profile to make rides in trailers more comfortable, and a cheek buckle that stays clear of the chin for easy access.

The Pnut comes in nine colors including fun patterns like Diggers, Sealife, Flying Rocket, Dinosaurs, Rainbow, and Shark, among others. It costs MSRP $49.99.
